Shimano Airlines.

I am sooooooooooooo glad this did not catch on. For those that don't know it is a compressed air derailer/ shifter system. (instead of cable actuated pulls)

Remember kids. Do not try and re-invent the wheel. Unless you work for Nicolai, in which case you will not only re invent it, you will put a lot of holes in it and it will be very expensive.
Do they not need cables or something? What's so great about them? They're just air?

compressed air in a bottle that fit a cage. no cables = no stucktion in mud or whatnot.

Too bad you needed a location for the canister.

ON the flip, it could have the lines zip tied right tighgt to the frame with no decrease in performance. and it got something like 300+ shifts per charge... no one shifts 300 times in a race, which is all it wasa developed for.
hey do you know if you can still buy theese?

They were a limited run for one year (I believe) but they can still be found on eBay or various Craigslist ads. Just be ready to put up some good money for them. I've seen sell anywhere from $800-1200 and those are recent prices.

I realize the price was ridiculous, but the Airlines worked great. They weren't really aimed at the recreational market anyway, just pro DH use.

I saw a set of airlines last week on craigslist (In Boston). Brand new, 2 air canisters, $1300. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

they can only last 600 shifts before its out of air sounds kinda gay if your stuck out sumwea and it runs out the no gears for you good idea but needs work

Plus the fact that falling could be potentially very dangerous

compressed gas + big impact = explosion

the idea was to suspend the rider not the bike, similar to the yeti, well the yeti was a copy of the softride bike.
