I've got the Crank Bros pedals, haven't crashed in them yet. I used to use SPD and found that when I crashed, my pedals tended to release on their own, so no, no worse implications (in my experience) with crashing in clipless.

I wouldn't say SPD's have ever caused a crash for me, perhaps they could make one worse but generally I find they're more likely to help me out of a bad situation.

When it comes to pedals there are loads more SPD style options with platforms, I like the look of the Nukeproof horizon's and the dmr v twin's
