I think I'll ride the bike as sold for a couple of days, then decide whether I feel like suspension deserves ameliorating.
Thoughts?
Great spec for the price. The fork will be fine for a while, but I'd sell off that float r in the rear, unless you have a bigass air can like an hlr, ccdba, or vivid back there air isn't great on the reigns. They pedal well enough with a coil. I'm sure you can sell that shock for like 70$ and get a new one for pretty cheap. Just my two cents after using three different shocks on my reign.
Cool! Thanks for all of the advice and input fellas. Nice to know from someone who has more expertise than I do that my direction isn't totally bunk.
I have never had any experience with air shocks, only ever coil. I guess that is my next area of research and questioning...
Float R isn't a great air shock. The medium/medium tune Rockshox Vivid air I have on mine now is a perfect fit for the frame - but you'd need to service it more often than a coil, that's for sure.
I'd say put a (7.875x2.25) Fox Van RC, or DHX RC2, RC4. I had the DHX 3.0 on mine and it was great!
However, the 66 is *very* heavy, so make sure you put in enough time on that 55 if you get that bike, you might end up wanting a 55 instead.
The spring looks a little - what? - rusty? Worth a go?
Shaft is scratched and the coil is suffering from coil bind, meaning that it's been chipped because somebody ran too much preload on it, I'd say pass.
just for curiosity, how can you tell that a coil is suffered from coil bind?? is it just from the chip?? Or there's another sign?? Maybe I can use this knowledge next time I buy an used coil.
to me the preload ring looks tight as hell, this causes the spring to permanently compress a bit. i wouldnt buy that dhx 3.0 or any dhx3.0 for that matter. too much $ to have rebuilt and in the end not worth it.
The deal fell through. After texting repeatedly throughout the day and the trip, 1038 km into my 1041 km drive to the guy's house (yep, I drove) he informed me that the bike had just sold. Undoubtedly the least considerate online sale of used merchandise of my life. An especially disappointing moment in my life, thanks to https://www.pinkbike.com/u/mikol74/
Looks like I'm back on the prowl... eff.
At least I am in BC, where the used bike selection is pretty decent.

That's bullshit. I'm sorry, but 1083KM? F*ck that guy. Did he agree to you driving up to take a look? In PB terms, "taking a look" normally means "If you aren't scamming me I'm getting it".
What's your plan now that you're in BC? Try to find a bike last minute?
My town, Nelson, is a biking town and bikes in your search range come up all summer. I'm happy to keep an eye out for you or act as eyes "to have a look" without you doing the driving.
