Another question: If I'd run clips for downhill racing, what shoes should i get?
Nike Cairns. Be like Nico.
Seriously, though, it's a pretty even split between people who go for maximum efficiency and run cross-country ballet shoes and those who use softer skate-style shoes. The former are more efficient and are usually faster to get clipped back in, but the latter are more solid if you ever stand on the pedals unclipped (which is sketchy and should be avoided, but happens once in a while).
As you can see, even 10x World Champ Nico jumps at the chance to diss the devil pedals at the Mega race this year. Julien Camellini also jumps on the bandwagon.
Death to the disco shoes and devil pedals.

it looks like he used clips at worlds...not super sure though. after he crashes he gets back on the bike but has to look at his feet before he starts to pedal.
just watch the end and you can see what i'm talking about.

One reason that Hill doesn't use clips is that generally he takes very different cornering lines that most other riders. He basically drifts everything really aggressively, which is where he makes his time, and then loses some on the pedal sections. I remember last years some website had a super good comparison of it from the Garbonzo DH, with Hill way inside a corner, off the berm, and then one of the other top racers (Camellini?) up on the berm like everyone else. Depends on your preference and riding style. If you are out to have fun then flats are a bit easier to goof around on, but for racing not very many people corner well enough to make up time with flats.

I don't think he's looking at his feet I think he's just digging in and gritting his teeth, or that's what it looks like, because he has to start off in a high gear and then as soon as he's shifted into a lower gear he can pedal faster.
