If you think about the quote it means that if everyone wants to conform. Then nothing new would arise as people would only be interested in the same things. Its a little extreme but it makes sense.

I recently saw this trending picture on facebook about socialism which illustrates that quote really well.

Its an anecdote about a university professor who in order to explain socialism vs. capitalism to a class offered to exchange individual grades for a common average grade. That meant that everyone's grade would equal to the average of the class instead of their own.

After the first exam they all got C or something. People who worked hard got mad that people who cared less brought the grade down. So next test, people made less of an effort. They all failed at the end of the course.

You really need to be unconfortable where you are in order to grow. The flip side is that inconformity brings all sorts of negative things in addition to growth and freedom.

I really don't want to turn this into a political discussion, but the fundamental socialist dogma is this (and it's kinda relevant as it's a quote):

"from each according to his ability; to each according to his needs"

To me, that means that, until no-one in the world is starving or homeless or malnourished, no-one gets needless luxuries.
