Can I use mineral oil in my Juicys?

I am fitting a pair of Avid Juicy 3's to my Kona... The Avid manual says use Dot 3 or 4 (which I have heard is corrosive) could I use Shimano's less aggresive Pink mineral oil instead? The brake kit is brand new & has never had any fluid installed as yet. Also will it affect performance, if I used the Shimano mineral oil?

Many thanks

NO, you can't use Mineral Oil in your brake.

You can use DOT 3, 4 or 5.1. (not 5) You can also mix these fluids without worries. The main difference between these three are their boiling points, 5.1 has the highest.

Yes, DOT fluid can be corrosive, but just spray water or alchol on it when/if it gets on the caliper, paintjob, etc. Also wear gloves when bleeding your brakes, brake fluid is not good for the skin. In worst case you could get MS because of it.

the seals in the juicy brake are designed to run with dot fluid, putting mineral oil in there will probably corrode them.

Cheers for the replies folks,

I will stick to Dot4 or 5.1 as prescribed in the installation guide...

Someone mentioned that the brakes will have been supplied pre-bled, (I haven't checked yet, but it would explain why there was no oil bottle supplied in the box) If this is the case - - no-worries.

Thanks any way for the input...I needed to know other riders views before I did anything drastic

Yep, pre-bled.. But if I "need to bleed" I know to use Dot 5.1

P.S. (If this should be in a different section of these forums -sorry but I'm a newbie) Can us English members have a little St Georges flag on their profile? I noticed that the Scottish members have a St Andrews, presumably Irish & Welsh will have their own too. England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales are all part of the United Kingdom allegedly.

Cheers
