Got a question, did some searching but nothing that would answer it for me. I'm looking at buying a 2007 Reign 1 frame/rear shock. I've done some reading and based on a pinkbike article I read the reign 1 has a "69 degree head angle as opposed to a 67 on the "X" series of Reigns". I'm wondering how much of a difference this will actually make? I want something that can do everything, I don't go to the DH park every weekend, but I want soemthing that can do it, as well as something I can ride XC and light Freeride with. Until now i hadn't realized the X series of reigns were different than the none "x" series. Will i even notice the difference in head angles? any opinions or helpfull info would be appreciated.
i ride a 2010 trance x as a do it all at the mo so the reign should do most things all depends what fork and shock you are going for, forks with lockout is always a good idea and shock with a good pedal platform like fox pro pedal
The rear shock has lock out, which should be good for climbing. Do you know how much a 2 degree change in head angle would affect things? I'm thinking not much, as it doesn't seem like a huge difference.
Some good info there, thanks. I'm going to be running a Marz bomber 55 r, 6" travel up front. I think the reigns came stock with a 5.5" travel fork, so it shouldn't be too far off factory specs. Judging by some of the head angles i see listed for XC bikes, the reign's 69 degrees should be a good compromize for all around riding.

"all mountain" and "shock lock out" just don't go together. A Reign or Reign X climbs very well without any lockouts or even Propedal needed.
BB size - Try looking on MTBR in the Giant forum, I'm sure it's posted there.
"A Reign or Reign X climbs very well without any lockouts or even Propedal needed" Good to hear. I'm buying it based on what I've read, heard, and have not actually ridin one. I've got a 2006 faith now, and it just is not a friendly bike if your not pointed down a hill.
brianl u say all mountain and lockout dont go together check out orange alpine 160 has lockout on its fox 36
locking out a 160mm fork makes the front end stay high, plus it might "stall" going over bumps - I'd prefer the ability to drop the fork for steep climbs but keep some bump absorption so it rolls easier.
good question. turns out i have a reign 2007 and reign x 2009. with 69 degrees HTA on the reign 2007, its outdated compared to the latest reign giant offers which has 68 degrees. a 69 degree HTA is more like a trail bike/aggressive XC nowadays. check out the latest trance that has 69.5 HTA.
i use the reign for my regular trail rides. it climbs pretty well specially that it has a steep HTA at 69. XC bikes have 71 HTAs. it'll pretty much eat the uphills but on the descents, you'll need to slow down a bit coz you'll feel the bike get rattled if you get to DH bike's speed. this is reasonable since the reign is not a DH machine.
i use the reign X to the bike parks and trips to moose mountain which is a 30 minute drive from calgary. does a good job on descents (but don't expect it to perform like a DH bike since you can only use a single crown fork on it so its not as stiff). you just need to replace some stock parts like the brakes (changed mine from 2 pistons to 4 piston brakes) and the stem (which i have at 70mm), a good fork (like a lyric or fox 36, better if it has travel adjust for AM applications) and its ready to rock. doesn't climb as well as my reign but if you like pain and suffering like i do (i'm more of an XC biker, LOL!), you can slowly but surely get to the top of the hill specially that the reign X has dual chain rings as compared to dedicated FR or DH bike with only 1 chain ring. but if the trail gets too steep going uphill, i usually end up pushing the reign X since 67 is just too relaxed and the weight or your bike and length of your stem (and fork travel) contributes to how well you can manage the uphills. so setting up your bike with the right parts is the key if you want an AM/FR bike that works good for you.
so if you like going to bike parts and doing AM rides, my suggestion is to go for a reign X. if you do more XC-ish type of rides (whole day, epic rides with lots of climbing), go for a plain reign.
here's some clips of me riding my reign X from various locations across alberta and british columbia. either i was the camera man or i was being videoed.
I do a mix bag of riding. Some xc, alot of light freeride and some DH bike park. Unfortunatly I live 7 hrs away from the nearest bike park, so a dedicated DH bike or even my Giant Faith doesn't suit alot of what I ride. Since I can't really afford to run 3 bikes, I'm replacing the faith with a reign. Time will tell if I end up wanting a Reign X, so might be some trial and error. I figure even the Reign 1 should be a pretty versatile bike overall. Thanks for the input. Cheers.
