My friend has threaded the disc brake dropouts on his fork.

Question is, will he be able to drill new threads? And what drill end will he need to use?

Also, will he have to drill a hole 1mm thicker than the old threads?

Thanks in advance.

Why would he need to drill them out? Just use a bolt that will fit the holes that are already there...

EDIT: Thanks for the reply. It's what one of my other friends said to do.

Plus the thread have gone so the bolt just keeps spinning and spinning.

could tap the hole and insert a heli-coil to bring it back down to the right size. Or just use a threaded insert like this:

is this a post-style brake mount, or a IS-mount that's picked up threads from the bolt going through?

Not sure on that, I'll ask him.

Im not sure id trust a helicoil as once drilled out it doesnt leave much around the outer (2mm approx.).

Some people have done it though.

What's the chance of him needing a new fork? lol

I'm guessing it's more likely than him repairing it?

You can get helicoil kits from ebay for around £20 or so.

What fork is it? A reba?

As i said, some people have done it and i have seen threads where 'engineers' have recommended it to them. As an engineer though lol i personally wouldnt trust it myself, not for such a critical place.

It's a Tora SLIte which came on a Rockhopper Comp 2010. And guessing it could split it with a helicoil kit?

Ah the tora's arent too bad.

Yeah i reckon it could, especially if your not amazing with a drill or tap (although both pretty simple to use, need to be delicate still).

Id say tell him to save up but buy a kit and have a go anyway? lol

He's only 15 and not sure if he's willing to do it as he won't be able to get a replacement fork if he messes it up.
