Hi, ive just began building a mtb/trials bike, and I was looking at getting a magura hs33, and I keep reading about 4bolt mounts, I was wondering wat I would need to do to my standard v mounts to make them fit?? I have no idea so any help would be great Smile

Magura makes an adapter called the "evolution adapter" or something like that. A lot of new HS-33 are sold with it (but not all).

If you're going to use the adapters you might was well stick with a v-brake. A decent v-brake setup with a booster and trials specific pads will work just as well. It helps to make sure you've got a really good cable, not something generic, like a odyssey linear slick. Also the avid SD7 levers are very helpful because you can adjust the power/modulation to make them more powerful.

Imo I would stick with vee brakes on vee posts. Too much messing around using maguras on them... not to say it can't be done, its just not worth it. Using vees on 4 bolt magura mounts is different since you have a solid foundation for the vees rather than vice versa.

Do your self a favor and get some avid ultimates, good pads, cable and a lever and you'll have good brakes.

Same^ and get the aluminum backed pads. Just make sure you line them up perfectly and go OCD on being parallel, and get a harsh/mild grind and you will have gobs of braking power!! Maybe even lightly rub a bit of tar on the rim and then there's NO slippage whatsoever.

another vote for vees, i've been using them for 4 years in trials, they're usually lighter than a magura and way less hassle to maintain

I'd say you need to upgrade your brake pads. From the photos on your account it looks like you have stock pads that came with the brake (what is it by the way?). If you are tight for $ then jagwire has some alright ones that made a noticeable difference for me http://jagwire.com/products/v/mountain_pro

Otherwise spend the extra cash and get some real trials specific ones;

these are what I have on my rockman Slate - they're fricken awesome! Beer http://www.nwtrials.com/apps/webstore/products/show/3886064

Its a monty x alp 219, i had the stock pads on but i fell sideway of a 3 foot ledge and it bent the pad in half somehow lol:s i
So i switched to some new cheapy pads i had on a scrap bike but the grind ate the pad away so now im running the stock front one and the other set of cheap one, i figured id need new pad but i just dont feel like im getting enough power of out of the vees, i was debating putting my magura hs33s from my monty x lite on my mod but id have to make mounts as i am really tight on money right now and idk how id go about that lol or if id even be worth it

Vee brakes will always be cheaper than Magura. never have to bleed them, easier to set up, and once they are set up - basically zero maintenance. the other thing to make your brakes feel like hydrualic brakes in a sense, is to get compressionless cable housing. it does wonders.

but maguras feel good too ive heard

Im good for maguras i have a good set already bled and i have the bleed kit for it that why i thought about mounting them on my mod it would just take alot of work, as for feel the maguras feel awesome i would use them on every bike if i could, with these vees if i set it so the lever locks up were i want it the pads will rub, and if i loosen them just enough to stop scrubbing the lever comes into the bar, its like a loose loose situation, so frustrated lol

Wow! never in a million years it would cross my mind for hydraulic V-brakes. Guess you learn something new all the time
