Alright, so im painting my frame and I bought some "Rust" Paint from Home Depot for it. The brand is called Tremclad and I was told it did not need primer by the "paint expert". The back of the can says "no primer needed on most applications" as well as "Use primer for galvanized metal surfaces", and "pitted or sandblasted surfaces should be primed"(I used paint stripper/sandpaper). I was wondering whether to to use primer or not, im not sure if aluminum is a galvanized metal or not. Any input would be much appreciated!
P.S. The guy at the store said he painted the rims on his truck with this stuff.
if you wanted to be an uber paint geek, you could use aluminium primer, which is an acid primer that etches itself to the metal. But then you would probably have to use follow up paint of the same brand.
Alumnium is not galvanised anyway, as aluminium doesn't rust
To be honest Tremclad is not going to give you the best paint job on your bike, especially without primer. It is a lower quality paint, and will chip and peel easily. The best way to use it would be to use a "self etching primer" under it, and use very thin coats and allow ample drying time in between coats. A more suitable paint would have been an automotive paint, with an automotive clearcoat on top. I have found most autobody shops are willing to spray your frame for quiet cheap if they can throw it in with another job. Some guy is getting his truck pianted blue, it only takes a few minutes more to quickly throw a coat on your frame, and they dont have to mix any more paint. It saves you on paint cost and labour. Go to a freindly autobody shop, have a talk with the painter, dont rush him, throw him a case of beer, and you might get a hgih quality job out of it.
I completely agree that rust paint will not give you a very good paint job. No matter what you do, its formulated to bond to rough rusty surfaces and doesn't really last all that well when sprayed on any smooth surface and the final finish isn't all that spectacular to look at. Personally, I would put it aside and go back and get any automotive spray paint with a self etching primer and a good clear. You have to remember that you get what you pay for and that is very true when it comes to painting.
Thanks a lot for the input and advice guys. I think what im going to do is pick up some of that self etching primer and put it on then paint, clearcoat etc. If that doesnt turn out well I'll just take it all off (or wait until I scratch it all up) and buy some automotive spray, and then I will only be down $20-30 from the previous paint job(Ive already bought everything except the primer). Thanks again for the help!
I have painted three bikes. two with spray paint and one in a booth. the Spray paint work equally as good or better than the gun and booth did.
What you might want to try is Tremclad enamel. Its super strong and won't chip as easy. I am just about to paint my '73 bus with a roller and this enamel paint. I saw a site on how to do it. the paint job costs about $50 but when done its super strong and looks amazing very high gloss. All done with a roller.
