Hi, I am looking into buying a short cage rear derailleur and am very interested in the shimano zee because of the clutch and it is inexpensive. I have a 1x9 setup and don't want to go 10 speed. I have read that i can use a sram 9 speed shifter with the zee, is that true? Could i use a 9 speed shimano shifter with it? Could i use a 10 speed shifter with it on a 9 speed cassette with 9 speed chain? What are other good short cage derailleurs, under $100?
Any help would be sweet.
thanks

Zee RD, X0 9spd rear shifter, 9spd drivetrain, works fine on my DH bike.

Zee with Shimano Saint 9sp shifter and 6 speed cassette works for me.

Installed it today, I'm using a sram x9 shifter. Everything about the drivetrain is 9speed apart from the zee of course. I have stacked 6mm of washers where the cabel sits to make the ratios closer and giving a better set up. But the cabel has to remain inline with the original path of the cabel or you will get poor shifting. Set up is just as normal from there on.
Hope this helps

why not just run the 1x10 set up the Zee is ment for? Its no more expensive then 9 speed. And since the Derailleur is indexed for 10 speed it wont shift correctly / smoothly as the gap for a 9 speed cassette is bigger. Also buy a old saint 9 speed shifter if you're set on 9 speed, sram won't work properly since sram shifter / derailleur is indexed in a 1:1 pull ratio, where as shimano is a 2:1 pull ratio.

Don't want to run 10 because then I will need new cassette and chain and mine are no where near woren. I just wanted the clutch mech. As for using saint 9 speed shifter it won't work. It will only work with a sram 9 speed. Shimanos 9 speed is 2:1 BUT there 10 speed is very close to 1:1 there for the sram 9 speed will work if you adjust it slightly.

I have heard that 10 speed chains and cassettes do not have the durability 9 speed ones do.

I am running x7 with a zee and a 6mm spacer and 1-7 work perfect 8 has a very slight hesitation and 9 has a hesitation but overall works really good.

sorry to drag this thread up again... but...

just done this... got it working absolutely amazing in all but the largest ring and I've no idea why.

any clues as to what I could adjust to make it work? I can get it into the top ring, but if it does that, it then throws it off on one of the gears in the mid-range and skips a shift on the trigger...

if anyone has used the spacer, does this help?

To get it to work in the largest gear you need to loosen the cable and pull the derailleur in line with the largest cog, once it is in line with it tighten the cable. Thats what i did and it seemed to work.
The spacer makes a big improvement, i got the idea and dimensions from this: https://www.pinkbike.com/u/jwick/album/Shadow-Plus-Mod/

I've had a bunch of people contact me about this mod since posting my blog post here:

This spacer will make the small adjustment to the cable pull ratio necessary to do exactly as you describe. I've made a bunch for the folks over at Ridemonkey and all are stoked on the results:

Just a heads up: Yes, the cable pull ratios are close such that it is possible to get all the gears when running without any form of modification. However, doing so means that you will have to rely on the limit screws to prevent over-shifting at the ends of the cassette. At the small-sprocket, this just results in a bit of cable slack, but at the large sprocket, the cable will be under a lot of tension, and you are putting a lot of load on the pivots of the derailer. You may also get poor shifting and/or skipping at the ends of the cassette. Yes. It works, but it wasn't good enough for me. I also tried the stack of washers for a while and this resulted in several frayed cables where the cable was clamped at the washer. This adapter is chamfered at the cable entry point to prevent damage to the cable.

I and many others have had nothing but flawless shifting since installing this in March.

I'm happy to answer any questions about this.
