Hey Guys So I want to start riding dirt jump and do downhill like stuff like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lGzW5LpcQg eventually right now Im 16 and I have extreme dedication. I started road cycling when I was 8 until now and I have dedicated my self to be the best in my age group and even in my city. But I feel like I want to move on. I just one 5k from a race and I have decided now is the best time to switch. But I don't know where to start. Can you guys help me by telling me how to start and what parts and such would be good for a sweet bike build. I know it will be way different from road but Im ready. So thanks for reading this and Please help me out Thanks.

find a dirt trail and follow it... do this all the time, start hitting the jumps and harder trail sections when you feel comfortable. Start small, you'll be surprised how fast your confidence builds. Don't ride alone at first, its beneficial to have friends to drag you out of the bush if you break yourself.

The dirt jump scene is less competitive than road biking. And Downhill does have more races, but still probably not as many as road. It's more about hanging out and enjoying riding. ; )

I cant speak personally for getting into downhill, but i can help you with DJ.

to start your probably gonna need to give up some hard cash. If you know a lot about bikes and what to look for when buying used i'd highly recommend that. you'll be able to get up and started for much cheaper. if you don't have that knowledge you can buy a lower end dirt jumper to start.

I personally recommend any of these:
http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/bmxdirt-jump/pseries/p26-am
http://www.norco.com/bikes/dirt-street/steel/ryde-26/
http://www.ns-bikes.com/metropolis-2,56,pl.htm
http://khsbicycles.com/bikes/2014-khs-models/sj200-14/

depending on whether you have some or want some you might buy pads.
I recommend anything from POC or sixsixone

now the fun part, start looking around for places to ride and people in your area who ride. i personally started "djing" at a skate park then met some guys who let me hang with them and come to an area they had built up. depending on were you are this can be easy or hard. then just ride. experience is everything. eventually you'll start to know people and people will start to know you. i've met some of the coolest people I've know through dirt jumping and love it with an insane passion.

This guy is spot on, I forgot to mention the equipment end of things... Make sure you're jumping a bike that can handle it, and get a good helmet! Mine definitely saved my life last October.

Riding alone sucks. I do it all the time not by choice. You have nobody pushing you to improve.

I like riding alone for working on technical stuff, but not for going big.
I feel like if I ride even a little but every day, I ride way better on weekend group sessions.
