There's a New MTB Shoe Brand in Town
It's strange how 1970's/80's VANS were popular, but then in the late 80's and 1990's both skaters and BMX'ers started demanding more high performance shoes, rather than flat rubber vulcanized to canvas. Brands like Etnies/Emerica/ES, DC Shoes, Axion, Path, really set a standard for well designed skate shoes that looked good but were also athletic. The Etnies Mike Vallely shoe of 2000 was, I think, one of the best. They had stitched soles, arch support, "air", ollie padding, padded tongue, heel protection, etc. http://skately.com/library/shoes/etnies-vallely When the baggy jeans trend started dying in the early 2000's, replaced by slim jeans and old school punk rock looks, everybody started going back to old school VANS for looks, not for performance. Vulcanized sole shoes are cheaper. Even worse than vulcanized are cup sole shoes where the sole is glued on instead of stitched. http://simplefootwear.co.uk/history-of-skate-shoes/
