If you paint a bike does it loose its value?

I have a specialized enduro and i was wondering if painting it would decrease the value of it by much. If it does by how much. I would be doing this myself and would not get anyone to professionally do it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I personally think it would. If I saw I bike painted I'd wonder if the paint was hiding anything, such as cracks and dodgy fixes. However that is just my opinion, someone else might love a custom paint job!

If its done in a paint shop and you do factory decals or air brush factory looking graphics it might be ok but take before pics close up of every inch of the bike to prove there is no cracks before you paint it. If you do like you want to and paint it yourself then I think the value will drop and if it looks bad the value will tank. Personally I'd never buy a repainted bike unless it was done by a reputable shop and I saw before pics to prove it wasn't covering something up.

If it is cracked, you repaint it, than continue to ride it, the crack will just show through again, especially if he just spray paints it.

I wouldn't buy a frame that had just been repainted before selling, because that is just weird that you went through the effort of painting something you are about to get rid of.

Other than that, it is a series metal parts that have been used and abused, who cares whether its been repainted? I would pay a little less simply because it isn't the same quality of coating protecting the frame.

I do custom paint and specialty work on the side, its one of my passions. In most cases it is not going to increase the value unless the person purchasing it likes the paint job as much as you do.

Paint will not hide cracks for long, paint is not THAT strong. Doesn't really matter if its from a spray can/powder coating or a sprayed automotive finish. It is not designed to be a "structural" part of anything outside of its own film.

If you are buying a bike that HAS been painted and you suspect a crack some where, look it over very well (should be done regardless) if you aren't confident buying from that person, IE they seem shady, you probably just shouldn't buy from them, painted or not.

If you want to paint your bike and you are concerned with the ability to resell, take some very good before pictures, to try and show there were not cracks or defects before the paint is applied.

Most of my friends have had a custom painted or powder coated bike at some point, it doesn't seem like it has ever been an issue in the selling process.

The overall value will also be a deciding factor
A $400 bike painted or not will still be around the same value.
A $3000 DH bike well its a different case completely.

Keep in mind it's hard to tell the year of the bike as well running serial numbers is kinda a pain in the ass to do in someone's garage so you take the number to the shop in the morning maybe a day or 2 later you get your answer and the bike is sold, and u missed out in a good deal.

dont. It will look like hell and, no offence, its pretty clear you don't have the slightest clue on how to do it properly, which means your paint will either look terrible and stay on or look good and peel off and bubble, or any combination of those results. You could just raw your bike (take all the paint off) and leave it chrome, even polish it if you wanted. But don't hurt that poor bike with shit paint, its done nothing wrong.
