The story starts with me buying a brand new nomad with dt swiss 350 hubs and wtb asym i23 rims 28 hole set up.
Im a fairly aggressive rider and in no time at all my rear wheel is destroyed and the front ended up about 3/8 of an inch out of true but i was able to straighten it out almost completely.
Now my question is this, are 28 hole wheels really that much weaker than a 32 hole set up? I have only ever had 32 hole wheels before and never had a problem like this. Now im looking at replacement rims but afraid that even if i buy a stronger rim that the same thing could happen because of the reduced spoke count...
Apparently the wheels where machine built which could have played a factor in a less than ideal initial build.
Need advice in what direction to go. Do i spend a little money just relacing new hoops or do i drop the cash in buying a legit 32h wheelset???
its a good question, particularly looking at 27.5 and 29r wheels. i often wonder if recent wheels have over emphasised figures on paper that look good for your average or new rider but wont hold up well to constant aggression from burlier types
the wheel you had was a pretty neat set-up even for rough carefree riding, so i have to ask if you kept a close eye on them particularly the spoke tension and clean contact points? they need to be run with a high degree of tension across all spokes. My brother just popped a nipple on his 28 spoke Charger r/wheel. but that was his fault as he hadn't touched them since getting them 5 months ago. he's a bigger harder rider.
i seem to be pretty hard on my wheels, and hate being put in 2 minds if i feel the need to nurse them, or if something does bust you kick yourself for taking the risk. you sound the same. unless someone can give you a good degree of confidence that a well built and maintained rebuild will do you good, for peace of mind I'd look for a more dependable option.
Well what bothers me is these wheels are hardly over a month old and im only 160lb soaking wet...
The rear wheel could be partly my fault because i noticed a few of the spokes seemed a tad loose, but nothing that struck me as being an emergency, and then a couple runs later it was just completely out of wack.
As for the front it was straight as an arrow with good tension. I got crossed up at a low speed otb and spun the wheel and it was bent pretty good for such a minor crash in my opinion.
Looks like new wheelset is the route i will be taking. Thanks for the advice.
