have to agree at first I found the tread pattern physically interfered with getting an even and deep initial bite. you would plant your foot then feel it wiggle and float till all pins found a recess to sink into. it didn't take long for the pins to eat away at the tread - its similar to the old sckool Van's waffle design. now the pins have a dog-chewed pit of fuzzy rubber to sink into with a instantly firm connection.
