So I recently got a pair of Saint M820 brakes. They're pretty awesome, but I'm totally baffled by the random gold cap on the levers!? It's threaded for no apparent reason- at first I thought it was some kind of funky bleed port! After a couple of weeks messing with the brakes getting them all dialled in I noticed that there was some, what appeared to be, mineral oil sat in the end of this gold cap? Got me thinking that maybe the reason I was having so much trouble getting these things dialled was because the oil was leaking from these gold caps somehow!?

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

It is a valve that release the pressure, to much oil in the system and it will release some of the oil.

Occasionally when pulling the brake lever on one of my Saint M820 brakes i get mineral oil squirting from the pressure valve. It happens while riding as well. This is causing serious deterioration of performance- the bite point moves around like a giddy child. However my rear brake (another M820) has been excellent so far, and I couldn't be more pleased with it! Looking around on the internet seems to reveal that I'm not the only person with this problem. My guess is that a seal has blown in the pressure valve? Still, mega disappointed Frown

Here's a video to illustrate the problem- you can see the oil squirt out!?

I'd get in contact with Shimano. Mine did not continue to let threw oil after it released the pressure.

As you say it could be the seal that broke.

Mine feont did it once and both kept pumping up both had been bled a handful of times to address it ........ Shimano replaced entire brakeset ,lever and caliper no questions asked. This was also 6 months after release date of the 820s so warranty wasn't an issue.

Unfortunately, It happened to me today.

I had my brakes bleeded yesterday, I always put a little presure with the singery afeter bleeding and closing the reservoir to leave them with that tight feeling. The thing is that today while riding downhill, I started loosing feel on my rearr brake and the lever started getting closer to the handlebars, eventhough they kept braking.
When I stopped, I saw the gold cap and the grip with mineral oil.
After that they kept braking but not with the same feel of course.

They have barely 9 months. I guess I will try to bleed them again and see if they keep leaking.
I am not sure if something broke down or not.

theres no fix, you need a new lever unfortunately. sucks, but worth it in the long run! maybe downgrade to a lever that doesnt suffer from this issue (zee etc?)

After bleeding them again, I can tell that the lever is defenetly broken. Tomorrow Im taking them where I bought them to get a guaratee swap....

yup bleeding was useless they are done.

I love my saints but my entire riding group runs them and only 1 set hasnt gone in for warranty. great modulation great stpping power but the first year of a new design. they work great when they work but i sold my stock avids so I dont have a spare set of brakes so if they crap out again a month of downtime isnt gonna happen during whistler Ill buy some hopes and sell the replacement saints. but damn are they nice until they totally crap out and need replacing

After sending my rear brake to Shimano service, they have substitute rubber joints, and they are supposed to be fixed. Still have to try them to see if they are truly fixed....

I took them back to the store where I bought them and they say that it might be normal...... mmm???
How come the front brake doesnt do it then?
Normal? in a long dh run, the brakes get much more temperature and pressure than with the bleeding, so there is something that I might not be understanding.....

Any help with this???

Sorry man, it's gonna have to go back to shimano again, unfortunately that's just one of those things! Try using less pressure when you bleed? That's my only idea. I don't even pressure bleed anymore out of pure fear of doing this to my levers again.

This has just happened to my saints. Do I send them straight back to shimano or send them back to where I purchased them from?
