You can, now is it worth it ? probably not. You will probably be able to get 2 or maybe 3 gears that don't slip, but that's it ... so no, not recommended

You could, you'd have to adjust the upper and lower stops for the required range of movement. For the price of a shifter and cassette you may as well upgrade the lot if your bike will accommodate it.

Oddly enough a Shimano 10 speed derailleur has the same pull ratio as a Sram 9 speed derailleur.

1st hand experience, no issues using a sram 9 speed shifter, 9 speed cassette and a 2014 Zee 10 speed derailleur.

Then I found this thread...which states that sram 8 and 9 speed shifters and derailleurs are compatible.

So it definitely won't work with a shimano 8 speed shifter
It probably will work with a Sram 8 speed shifter.
Replace the cable and housing

Even better, if you throw on a Narrow wide, you have a system you can run without a guide!
