Hey,

Want to make a dirt jump bike but all the complete ones are too beat up or too expensive. Any suggestions?

I'd say keep checking the Craigslist or equivalent for Calgary. The going rate on used MTB's is half of retail for used bikes, so you should be able to get a good deal.

if using bmx cranks and drive train
cromoly bmx cranks
bmx Sprocket
bmx Chain
bmx bottom bracket appropriate for your frame and cranks (spindle size and bottom bracket shell width)
Bottom/crank spacers
A rear hub with a bmx driver

If running mtb style drive train and cranks
mountainbike cranks
mtb bottom bracket appropriate for your frame and cranks (spindle size and bottom bracket shell width
often mtb cranks come with a bottom bracket)
mtb Chain ring
mtb chain
single speed conversion kit
standard mtb rear hub that has a cassette to fit the single speed conversion kit onto

front tyre
rear tyre
tube
tube
front wheel[rim, rim tape, spokes, nipples, front hub (get the right hub axle compatibility for your fork)]
rear wheel {rim, rim tape, spkokes, nipples, rear hub (get the right one either a mtb cassette one or a bmx style driver one with mountain bike spacing 135x10 mm, also get one that is compatible with your disc rotor)]

If running rear brake
disc rotor (usually 140mm or 160mm, get the right type to suit your rear hub)
rear brake adapter (get the right type for your frame and size for your rotor)
rear brake
brake pads (often come with brakes)
cable guides
cable ties

Optional extras
Chain tugs (if using horizontal dropouts
chain tensioner if using vertical dropouts
front brake and associated mounting and rotor

I think that's pretty much it
also if you are gonna build it yourself you'll need a bunch of tools, some which you might never use again.

Its really expensive to build from scratch.

You need to decide what style of drive train you want mtb is cheaper lighter but you can only ride dirt on it
bmx is much stronger and is made of cromoly so takes vibrations and impacts better so you can ride street and skatepark fine, it also allows micro drive trains (a drive train with a tiny sprocket e.g 22 up from and a ten tooth driver at the back)
Choose whatever you want
i recommend a chromoly steel frame over an aluminium because they are are stronger and take vibrations an impacts

on chain reaction cycles look at their product line they have awesome frames cranks and bars aswell

ns bikes, their twin company makes nicer parts at a higher price check them out too i noticed your in Canada you lucky dude lamacycles has the cheapest best stuff and they only deliver to us and Canada

anyway ive rambled too long
good luck

my best advice would be to buy used but try before you buy

just a note there are so many different kinds of dirt jump geometry the main too being street/park and dirt jumps

either will be fine for either but think about what you wanna do most.

street/park geo has steeper headtube and higher bottom bracket to be nimble and bunny hop high
dirt geo has slacker headtube and lower bottom bracket for stability and cornering
