How to dig up tall grass

I then spent a day digging up the grass with a regular shovel on part of it so that it looks like this:

It turned out pretty good but it was a lot of effort for a small amount of trail and I feel like there should be a better way of doing it. Does anyone have any tips?

ist weight allows you to cut through the roots with less effort. Once you get a rythm going it is very efficient and also allows you to do benchcuts.

Other Option would be to wait for wet weather and just rut her in

I've also tried roto tilling through the grass. The long grass tumbles into the ?rotors? and you'll have to pick it out before too long. If you mow it or weed whip it first, you won't have this problem. BUT the soft dirt is prone to growing weeds. I don't recommend tilling because of this.

Mattock or pulaski & lots of sweat! You have to get rid of the organic matter. Looks like you did a good job. No easy way, other than a mini excavator.

McLeod, Rogue Hoe, or similar, when the ground is soft. Not very effective in dry, midsummer hardpack. Just be sure to bring a file and throw an edge on it periodically, to keep it easily cutting through fine roots.
