195lb rider 300psi for 20% sag Rock Shox deluxe RT? That can't be right can it?

I have a brand new commencal meta tr 4.2 essential with a rock shox deluxe RT on it. I have been trying to dial in my sag to 20% as instructed per the SRAM Youtube sag set up video. The bike has 100km of fairly easy single track. Anyways, to get to a 20% sag, I need to inflate the thing to about 300 psi (yes, shock is in the open/unlocked position during set up) At first I thought it was just my error, so after doing it again, still the same result. Then I changed shock pumps, still same result. This can't be right can it? The shock is brand new from factory, and I have not messed with anything...

Hi there.
check for the damping sticker that indicate the damping rate(Blue for compression and Red for rebound). Check with your nearest lbs to advise you on the damping settings.

Sounds reasonable. Max is 350.

Are you setting sag in the 'attack' position? I find this way not particularly reliable. The leverage ratio of the bike may not respond well to such a low sag.

Try this-
Lower seat so feet can touch floor. Easy with a dropper.
Sit on seat with back vertical not touching bars.
Lift feet slowly to transfer all weight to seat.
Set to 35% with this method.

I don't have same bike as you, but I'm about 210Lbs and my RS Super Delux is about 260psi

Oh, chances are you will need to fill it with tokens if it's not already.
I have 3 in mine which is max.
Doesn't help so much with sag, but stops us big fellas bottoming out.

Also, the bigger the air chamber the harder you will find setting it up for your weight.
Good luck

I am 85kg riding a Lapierre Zesty AM 827 with a Rockshox Monarch relay shock. The bike is a 2017 model but brand new. So far I haven't been able to get it under 35% sag, even with 320psi in it! We have sent the shock to Sram and they checked it over and said that it was fine. Doesn't seem that way to me... I'd be interested to know what could be causing that, as piston diameter x pressure = force, so it shouldn't really be able to fail, unless of course there is pressure on both sides of the piston? Thoughts?

Very interested in this too. At 210# running 230# in the deluxe rt3 shock on my 2019
Stumpy and it’s still sitting at 35% sag. According to my rubber band I’m using all my travel but not feeling a bottom-out. I thought max pressure on these were 250, but above says 350??

I have given it some thought. My shock is the Monarch debonair with the high volume can. I believe this is the reason why I need more pressure than expected. This has a max pressure of 350psi (as written on the outside of the shock).

With 5 - 6 volume reducing bands I have got the shock feeling a lot better, more ramp up so it feels less limp-wristed. I can also run lower pressures, down to 220psi now, without bottom out.

The sag on my set up is still 35% or more. I put this down to the kinematics of the suspension as air pressure doesn't change it much, although lower pressure and volume reducers won't be helping me to reduce this.

Hey Steve - sorry to be so laggy in response. Appreciate yours a lot - we have a similar thing going on. With the revised max pressure limit understanding I've gone from 230psi to 300psi (actually recommended by Spesh) in the RT3 Deluxe and sag is now 20%. Other things I've read says suspension design (Horst/FSR) is the x-factor - really buttery and deep, but you have to run big pressures on it versus a VPP or DW Link type setup to get pedal support.
