Matte vs Gloss paint

Hi guys,

I am looking into getting a 2019 trek remedy 8! My first full suspension all mountain bike. It comes in two colours, matte black and gloss Miami green. Now I was thinking about the durability of the pain, from what I have heard, the gloss tends to last much longer. However I prefer the matte colour. Also bear in mind I work at a bike shop in NZ and the only available colour in NZ is matte black however I have the option of ordering the green one in. Also are there any other bikes worth considering that are comparable, I can get the trek remedy for about 2,700NZD due to staff price and trek university discount, usually its 4,800NZD. Any other bikes worth looking into? From what I've been told the giant reigns don't tend to be very good and also the reign 2 is matte as well.

Get the colour you like the most, it’s only paint, it’s going to get chipped and scratched either way

Matte does smudge easier (things like grease are easier to see and harder to remove). That may not matter as much since we're talking about black though.

I have bikes that are both matte and glossy. Honestly, after some abuse, the matte finished bikes look better. I think that chips and scratches are more noticeable on a glossy finish. If it's a quality finish, cleaning, smudges, stains, scratches, chips, etc., are no more an issue on a matte as they are on glossy. Every finish from different manufacturers is going to be of different quality, but my daily ride is a light colored matte finish, and so far has held up better than any gloss finished bike I have or had. That bike has had its share of crashes. Its handle bars, levers, cranks, derailleur, etc,., all have scratches, but not a visible mark on the matte finished frame. I can't say the same of my gloss finished bikes.

The flatting agent in the finish works by increasing surface roughness. This surface roughness makes contaminates cling to the surface more easily. This happens regardless of the quality. Certain things like small scratches show up less easily on matte finishes so there are trade offs.

I went for the Remedy 8 in Miami green gloss, because I like bright bikes and glossy finishes, which seem to be hard to get on a bike these days since matte is in fashion. Great thing about a gloss finish is that you can use car waxes, polishes, GT85 etc to protect it and keep it looking good, whereas with matte you can't do anything to it.
As for durability, there is little in it. Matt paints are generally harder (more resistant to scratches, but chip easier) compared to gloss paints from experience.

Both colours are awesome, so I would just go with whatever one you prefer the most since ultimately it will boil down to personal preference.

I had a Giant Reign before the Remedy, and I can say I was disappointed in the paint which scratched and chipped easily, and the bike was not as well engineered as the Remedy. I don't know what prices are like in NZ, but here in the UK Giants are relatively poor value for money compared to the other large brands such as Trek and Specialized.
