I love 27.5 to death but I am forced to run XL and XXL frames. Would this look strangely out of proportion?

I used to ride XL 26" frame. That was fine. 29 is not the same as 27.5 no matter what they say - proportions be damned!

If you like the smaller wheels, no 29er will feel the same. Someone will try to tell you that because you are big, the big wheels will be OK. Next they will tell you about some 29er that changed their mind and rides like a smaller wheeled bike. There's no doubt that some 29er's ride well but not like a 27.5. So if that's what you want don't worry about the frame/wheel proportion.
