Broken bottom bracket, is this my fault?

Brand new shimano bottom bracket installed at shop. Took the bike home and was wiggling a brand new set of raceface cranks in and when they popped through the plastic dust cover snapped and broke into two pieces.

I'm assembling a brand new bike so I was able to shove the dust cover back in and get on with the rest of what I needed to do. Wondering if this was me screwing up somehow or if the product is faulty?

Not to worried about the answer, it's a 40 dollar part. Just want the truth

Difficult to answer! I thought the BB's would have been a bit stronger than that. I've not had one do that before and I've been a bit rough on pushing the crank through. I suppose it depends on how hard the wiggle was?

I am not overly familiar with Shimano BB as I usually run race face BB’s, but isnt that just the plastic piece that slides over the main seals? I am sure your shop would have an extra from a old BB they would give you, or a friend who has changed a BB before will surely have extras lying around.

This is both a dust cover (not very good at it but well, it's there) and also a small spacer. As long as your crank arm is resting on the plastic bit in the center, you'll be fine. As Branmuffin said, ask the shop if thye have one spare, or to keep one for you when someone changes his/her bottom bracket.

On the picture it looks like it can still work, so I'd just use it and not bother with it. Probably not worth buying a new bottom bracket for that.

It's definitely just a plastic cover, but it's split in half. Never installed the bottom bracket or even had a threaded bottom bracket so I wasn't sure if that's a piece that can just be replaced

The new frame was purchased from a different shop then the shop I used use for parts and service. Talk to my regular shop I was told Shimano basically doesn't warranty parts. The shop I bought the bike from gave me a bunch of discounts so I'm not going to ask them to eat the cost of another bottom bracket. I'll just run this one until it chews up the dust seal and then get a new bottom bracket

Clean it, glue the 2 pieces back together and it'll last the life of the bottom bracket.

the one problem is it didn't break clean so there is a Jagged Edge that I can't see inside of the bottom bracket to line up with. I put it back in somewhere that it fit and mounted the cranks LOL. I'm not going to worry about it

Did you use the adapter race face sends on the end of your spindle as it went through? It is there to help align/centre the spindle as it goes through and should help prevent what happened.

I'd like that comment if I could.

Was at the shop today saying how I usually learn by breaking things. I don't mind wrenching on stuff but it sure doesn't seem to come naturally lol.
