Why is frame only so expensive?

This has always annoyed me. Is it because they want you to buy a whole new bike instead of just upgrading the frame?

An alloy Kona frame is 2699. I got my full bike for 2300 Facepalm

Frame only options seem expensive because: 1: big brands can have components for cheap and the complete bike price looks more "reasonable" when compared to buying a frame. 2. their business is in selling bikes, not frames, therefore they charge extra if you only want the frame.

Cheapest process 153 (the bike in your profile) is 4000 cad and I'd have to replace most of the parts on it. The few companies that will even sell you a frame only tend to go for around 2700 cad. So you're really only paying a small premium for frame only looking at full msrp.

Don't get me wrong , it's still pricey but that's the cheapest option (beside maybe Ns bikes from lamacycle) hands down in canada and trust me I've check everywhere

A carbon Deviate frame is 2750 (assuming we're talking GBP)

Are both those prices RRP? or is the full bike NOS?

Generally its because they want to keep the same margin selling you the frame vs the full bike, but I've never known a full bike RRP to be cheaper than just the (identical) frame

I just looked at the orbea rallon. Frame and shock £3000 or a full build £3500.

£3750 with the same rear shock. But still, more than the cost of just the frame (inc shock, HS and chain guide)

Its never been the best value way to build a bike, but you do get exactly what you

I don't think there is a set rule or consistency across all companies, for example the Yeti Sb6 team was over £10k, I built a higher spec sb6 than that for less than £7k... I think the cheaper brands give good deals on the parts and kit but the brands like Yeti and Santa Cruz are marking up the price on full bikes just as much as they are on the frames.
