Hey there, ( fairly new into the mechanical side of things. )


I recently bought a 2016 Giant Trance 3 and im reading into the Giant SXC-2 27.5 wheels it came with, and want to upgrade the wheel set as the next step.

Reasons are- they are a 19mm wide rim, and that says it all.

I want to be able to put 30mm wheels on the bike.


I am currently reading about boost as well and this is where I need some help, my bike frame seems to suit the smaller rims?


The wheels have a Giant S-XC, [F] 15mm hub on them, and it doesn't look like there is anymore room in-between my fork Axel, what would I need to do to this bike in order to achieve the 30mm upgrade.

Im confused if I order a wider set of wheels- that may come boosted- if they would even fit in-between my forks and frame.. Do I need to upgrade my fork to achieve this? and then what about the rear?


There is a ton of info out there and im having a hard time gathering it in order.

So just to clarify a few things.....
Boost spacing has to do with how wide the hubs are. What you're talking about with 30mm is the inner diameter of the rims you'd like to run.

Non boost spacing is 100mm front and 142mm rear. Boost spacing is 110 front and 148 rear. I'm not sure what would fit on a non boost fork for rim width but I had the same Trance and am fairly certain a 30mm rim would clear in the back no problem.

The fork that would have come on that bike would be non boost spaced. If you ever do decide to replace the fork it would need a boost spaced hub. The rear is non boost spaced and needs a non boost hub.

I had that same bike and put a Marz bomber Z1 on it at 150mm and upgraded the wheelset. Was rad. If you're not thinking about replacing the fork call every shop within driving distance looking for a non boost wheelset. If they have one still in stock they should be willing to cut you a really good deal on it since it's not a current standard.

The 30mm rim will fit no problem, the thing is to benefit from rims that wide you want to be running at least a 2.4 or 2.5 wide trail tyre and if the frame/forks can't accomadate this tyre width then there is no point having wide rims with thinner tyres resulting in an overly square tyre profile. Check what size tyres fit your bike, then check online to see which size rim is most ideal for that size tyre and make your decision from there.

Yes thats exactly it tho, admittingly aware that I am trying to learn all this before purchasing online.

The current rims are to thin for the style of riding i want to do and I purchased the bike while over looking this. I was on the hunch that the 30mm would fit the rear- but not the front.

Which is totally cool cause I want to upgrade the fork anyways- this thread answered my questions!

In the future ill run a 30mm rim non boosted in the rear, and ill have a 34 talas fox fork in the front with a boosted wheel.


All this so I can do exactly that, which is having 2.5 tyres on an old geo frame!

Good plan. The wheels and fork are the weakest part of the older base model Trance. A decent fork and modern wheels you can do just about anything with that platform. If you know you're going to get a new fork then you can get a boost front wheel and a non boost rear and you're off to the races.

Now you just need to decide if you're going to run the fork at 140 or 150mm travel. Both work great on that generation of Trance. Just depends if you're more lycra or baggy shorts.

You're wrong, sort of.
The 2014 Trance 1/2 had OD2, but from 2015 onwards they came with standard tapered steerers (I have a 2015).

OP - does your bike have 12x142 or QR rear dropouts? You'll need the conversion kit to run TA.
I agree with the people saying, if you're thinking about a new fork, then it makes sense to get a boost fork and front wheel.
FYI I'm running 2.6 tires on 30mm rims and there's decent clearance, but it also depends on the tire make/model, some run big/small.

Yup and head set cups are pressed in so even if you had OD2 (which my 2014 did) you just need a new headset cup pressed in. The fact that my trance came with a 140mm fox 32 that had OD2 on it is still one of the most ridiculous things I've ever come across. As if that is the primary flex point in that horrible little fork.

And yes brian is right. You'll need the dropout kit and an axle to switch from QR to well an axle out back. It's not that expensive, I think was around 60ish CAD total
