Hi,

I hoping I can get some advised on whether it is a smart thing to buy a second hand $5-6k mountain bike that won't have the manufacturer warranty. Here is my dilemma; I have been saving for a while to upgrade my 2013 Trek bike. I have done a lot research and found that the 2020 Ibis Ripley is the bike I want. My local dealer Ibis dealer has a frame on order but won't get it till July, 2021. The problem is that Spring/Summer is my favorite time to ride and I don't have Patience to wait 6 months. I found a 2021 Ibis Ripley, one owner that's for sale about 3 hours from where I live. I guess what I need advise on is if it would be smart to buy a used Carbon frame bike that won't have frame warranty.

I don't think it's necessarily a 'dangerous' things to buy a used-carbon bike. If you look at the buy/sell you'll see a majority of bikes up for sale are carbon. If they we're that questionable I don't think you'd see many up for sale. Plus, if it's a 2021 model, it can only have been ridden for so long, probably not a lot of time for accidents and damage to happen.

In any case, have you thought about the Ripley AF? It's new for this year, and although it's not carbon, it's pretty dang sweet. Plus it'd also save you some money. Just throwing it out there.

I have bought a number of frames here on PB, aluminum and carbon, and what I look for is photos to help show condition to help identify a bike that might be clapped out (chips, scrapes, dents - all help tell the story) and ask the owner why they are selling and see if I can't pick up some information that will help determine if the purchase is a good move or not.

I bought a new carbon Ibis frame two years ago and they have very solid carbon so if the bike looks like it is legit and in good shape, and the owner doesn't seem sketchy I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger if it fits what you want and you have the coin.

I bought an IBIS Mojo frame from here and it was fine. The more pictures the better, talk to the seller and get a feel for the use it has had.
Does it match the condition?
Is there a bit of wear and tear but no abuse?
Areas on the downtube are vulnerable so if you have impact marks pay close attention
Go over the seat chain/stays
Are there any bolts and the fittings unexpectedly loose?
Take some allen keys so you can give bolts and the bearing spindles a turn.
Is there a receipt for the original purchase if it was new?
Is there a convoluted reason for the sale?
This is not as stupid as it sounds and can give an insight into the seller.

Most import, don't be afraid to walk away. It may be a 3 hour trip each way but it is still cheaper than buying a dud.
My dealings with sellers on PB have all been good, maybe I have just been lucky but compared to other websites that are around in the UK (and eBay) my feeling is that most are genuine people. The frame I paid cash for as I went to pick it up, anything else has been PayPal as a proper transaction to give both me and the seller some protection. As a previous post has said, the Ibis frames are pretty well engineered compared to some.

Again, if in doubt, keep the money in your pocket and walk away.

I looked at a bike today, the seller bought it new last May but didn't register the bike with Ibis. Do any of you know what Ibis's registration cutoff time and could I register it under my name and get the frame warranty?

I've purchased a few bikes second hand and never gave it a second thought, I did check out the bike thoroughly and had my lbs check them out as well and am still riding one to this day.If you don't know what to look for have a bike shop look it over for you to be on the safe side, and if the seller has any objections to the idea then I would walk away.

I don’t think that would work. If you need warranty service you are not going to be sending it back to Ibis, you will be taking it back to a dealer. The dealer or Ibis will require proof of purchase, which you won’t have.

The odds of you needing warranty work for the frame is slim, but make sure it’s reflected in the price you are paying. Don’t pay new prices for a used bike. If you are that worried about warranty, just wait until you can get a new bike on stock.

Agree with what the person above said. And if I recall correctly, one of the brands warranty policy I was looking at recently specified something like 30-60 days to register so it'd probably be out of that window.
