Hi all, I had a Specialized fatboy SE stolen. I am about to buy a replacement. Anyone have a recommendation for the best bike lock to get? I had a standard Master lock chain but they were no match for the blot cutters the thief used. Thanks!

I am partial to the Abus 6500. Folds into a compact package and is a difficult pick and very resistant to grinder attacks. Nut splitters are its weakness but not many would be theives are walking around with those.

the best bike lock is........
A beater bike

Even the strongest bike locks can easily and quickly be broken, there's even been incidents of thieves cutting the frame to steal the bike for expensive parts

Although there are many options on the market, the Ram Pro Heavy Duty bike chain is a great choice. The bike chain is designed to be the proper size and design to secure the bike or any other valuables you wish to keep safe.

If your bike looks a peice of shit I will leave it alone, however, if it
looks decent and could net me some extra cash, then I will whip
out my DeWalt cordless 4.5" angle grinder with a 1mm stainless
cutting disc ( as this cuts clean and quick with minimal friction,
so less sparks ) then ride off into the sunset.

No one challanges you, the risks are low and reward high, parts
are very difficult to trace, frames can be hit and miss, but folk
don't seem fussed to note serial numbers, trackers are pretty shit and dont
hold battery long, but even then stick it somewhere out of sight for 48hr
cooling off in bushes, after spending a quick 10mins taking the forks, wheels,
snip hoses, cables for shifters, mechs brakes etc before hand.

If you get caught, then its usually handling stolen goods, because you say you
got it off a polish fella in pub, it cant be prooved, punishment tends to be a tag
for 3 month, which means you can roam daylight hours selling your stash that
you got away with and be at home in the evening, feet up spliff and pizza and shit
on the TV with mates, laughing at the poor suckers of society.

Now I aint no theif but thats how f*cking easy it is, theives can be stupid but they know
how the sytem works and that your stupid lock is useless.

Crap cheap bike if your leaving for any length of time or learn to hold them tears back and suck it up.

the BEST bike lock is a beater bike that no body would want to steal.
There is no way I would leave my pride an joy unattended in an urban eviroment.

apart from that tho..
my advice would be to use more than one lock, if you get a D lock make sure to also get the bars that slide over the 'D' an fill the gap so nothing can be put through the gap to be used as a lever. A heavy duty hardened steel chain with more than one heavy duty pad lock, be sure to wrap it around the bike an what youre locking to again so a lever cant be put in the gap an use two or three padlocks to lock each loop of chain. Also a small pad lock on chain ring an brake rotors to immobilise the bike.
What you want to do is make your bike as difficult to steal as possible so a thief in a hurry will move on to an easier bike.

BUT,
with all this said..there are stories of profesional thieves cutting through the frame to get a few K's worth of parts to sell. So NO lock will be strong enough in that case
Also
We've all seen the you tube vid of a buch of scallies with an angle grinder cutting through a lock while every one just stands there an watches!!!

So yeah get a beater bike instead
