Troy sizes

Hey everyone, I bought a medium 2021 troy and I’m wondering if I should’ve gone for the small considering the fact that the troy’s reach seems pretty long in his category. I’m 5’9 and according to devinci’s size range, I could even go for a large but it doesn’t seem to make sense. Anyone have an idea on this? Cheers

I'm about 5'11 on a good day and ordered a medium based on the recommendations at the LBS. Based on sizing I could do a large or medium. I'm coming from an incredibly old kona which was a medium. With the updated geometry, a large could have felt massive. So a medium should be a good spot for you. Small might have been a little too undersized.

It looks like a reach of 430 to 470 mm would be good for my height. The small is 440-445 and the medium is 460-465 so I’m in the largest end of the recommended range. I’ve been used to quite shorter bikes and it’s making me doubt. We’ll see when I get it but even if I wanted to downsize I don’t think it would be possible. Fingers crossed...

It kind of depends on what kind of riding you do, If you want stability at high-speed go with a larger frame, you want a snapper easier to maneuver bike go with a smaller size. I'm 5'9 too, and I have always ridden larges.

I usually like it shorter/snappier. The fact that you’re always on larges at 5’9 kind of put things in perspective. Thanks for your input.

One thing to consider is the reach is long but the steep seat tube and slack head angle squeeze the top tube length so it’s not just a matter of looking at reach numbers. That being said no way should someone 5’9” be on a small. I can’t imagine it anyway. I’d be cramped as hell. My guess is you’ll feel very comfortable on the medium.

It sat there for months awaiting a wheel upgrade that in the end could not by sourced while I was filled with buyer's remorse about getting something that would be much too big and clumsy. I played with RAD measurements and that told me the bike was oversized. I finally brought it home last weekend and was very pleasantly surprised hopping around my driveway on it. I had no issues lifting the front or rear end, bunny hopping, or any other low speed stuff so my mind is at ease. It will still be another 2 weeks or so before the trails are dry enough to run it through its paces. Keep in mind I went to a 500mm reach from a severely undersized 436mm reach medium I bought in a hurry last year to get back into the sport.

Now my only real complaint about the aluminum XL is it's ugly . The top and down tubes don't join before meeting the head tube like on smaller sizes and the stand over seems excessively high (upwards of 50mm taller than some other popular frames in similar reaches) making for a big awkward space between the rear shock/rocker linkage and the top tube.

436 to 500 mm is quite a gap. Good for you if it feels right, I’m not really familiar with the rad measurements but my understanding is that it can’t be done without the bike. I’d like to know what the medium size would give. There’s too much data available these days, but when I’ll finally get riding it’ll all be irrelevant!

Another thing I keep an eye on is headset length and stack height. My legs are on the long side so if I go with a smaller frame I can run into having to run a lot of spacers. Of course there's options to increase handlebar rise and things like that.

Hey man, I saw your post about the 2021 Troy — I’ve been looking into that bike myself and totally get what you mean about the reach. I’m also around 5’9” and stuck between sizes all the time. Curious how the medium’s been feeling for you so far on the trail? Too stretched out or manageable?

I had a large and I’m 5’10”. I’m on an S4 Stumpjumper EVO now. The large Troy was a hair too big for me. If I was buying another it would be the medium with a 50mm stem most likely. The large Troy wasn’t much bigger than my EVO but the reach was just over the line to make it a bit too big.
