Hi. Does anyone know, is the difference between Shimano XT 12s derailleurs just the cage lenght or it the main body also different in any way? Or to ask this way, if i put a medium cage on a derailleur that originaly had the long cage, would that be identical to brand new GS derailleur?

Thanks!

I don't 100% know for sure if the actual derailleur body is different between the long and medium cage version but doubt it. The main issue depends more on what size cassette you plan to run a medium cage derailleur with.

Generally a medium cage Shimano derailleur won't be able to handle a 10-51 cassette because it exceeds the (recomended) max drivetrain capacity of 35t, e.g 11-46 are the biggest cassettes medium cages can handle.

Long cage derailleurs have a higher max drivetrain capacity figure of 41t to accommodate for the chain length required to run a 10-51 cassette.

Yes, this i know. Im planing to run 10-45 cassette and i want a little more ground clearance.
On a side note, i also saw some video using medium cage on 10-51 cassette and it worked on the repait stand(our there might be different story) if anyone wonders.

If you'd have given the details of your plan or reasons why I wouldn't have told you what you already know.

Yes, think I watched that video too but didn't take much notice. I guess some people like to experiment, push the design limits and try these things out....I don't.

Side note: Go for it, stick a medium cage on, see how it goes then maybe you could even do your own video and show the results.
