Compatible Road Shifter w/XT 10 spd derailleur?

Hey - looking to resurrect an old racing hardtail into a bike-packing ride. It has a Shimano XT RD-M781 SGS, Shadow Type (10-spd) w/equivalent hydraulics brakes. Hoping to mod in a drop bar, so I'd need a set of Shimano road shifters (i.e. GRX, Ultegra??), but seeing if anyone has done this and how did it work considering it's all indexed for 11 or 12 spd nowadays.

Figured this'd be the bunch of frankenbikers to ask.

The usual way is to install a Wolf Tooth Tanpan with a regular 10 speed brifter (but not Tiagra, which has a different cable pull).

So scoop up a Tanpan and some GRX 10 spd shifters and the throw should align? Sounds cheaper than a full GRX upgrade.

Now that you mention it, I think the 10 speed GRX stuff copied the pull ratio of 10 speed Tiagra (which was all alone until GRX 10s came along).

You'd best confirm this before making a purchase, but I think you would have to use an 11 speed MTB derailleur, 10 speed cassette, and 11 speed Tanpan to make use of the 10 speed GRX or Tiagra shifters.

Alright I'll keep looking. Basically an XT drivetrain but with a drop bar shifters...thanks for the input never heard of the wolf tooth component you spoke of.

I think the best bang for your buck, since you already have the derailleur, would be the Tanpan plus a 10-speed Shimano 105 brifter (ST-5700).

Great suggestion. Thanks again!
