Stuck/out of options for rear wheel hub

So a while back I purchased a used Cannondale Cujo 2 27.5+. Rode it hard for a few years and a few issues rose up down the road. Anyway, covid happened and a knee injury and I had more time on my hands and wanted to convert my bike to a 1x12 from it's 2x10 config. I purchased all of the parts and wanted to remove the cassette but the lock ring was stuck.

I took it to my LBS and they couldn't get it out either. I asked if replacing the hub would be an option and was told that with the cost of a new hub, getting the spokes properly installed at that price I might be better off with a new wheel. The rear is a 141x9 boost and no such wheels exist anymore based on my searches.

I saw something about getting a 12x148 wheel and using endcaps to convert it to 141 but this is beyond my knowledge base. Anyone have any tips? Thanks in advance.

I believe you could get a hope hub and just get 9mm endcaps for it. Could you remove the freehub and put a new one in the current wheelset?

Well I started gathering up all my bike parts that I purchased and found that I actually did buy a Hope 4 148x12 hub with new caps back then. I think I have to replace the hub regardless since after checking the old hub a few bearings came out and are nowhere to be found.

To answer your question no, I cannot remove anything. It is seized. My only option is to take an angle grinder to the locking cap which just spells destruction.

Hey man,
Really appreciate you sharing your journey — sounds like you’ve been through a lot with that Cujo. Totally feel you on wanting to upgrade to 1x12, and that stuck lock ring situation sounds super frustrating. I’ve dealt with something similar on an old Trek — ended up in a rabbit hole of compatibility stuff too.

About the 141x9 boost issue — yeah, that standard is a bit of a unicorn now. But you’re right, there are some workarounds using 12x148 wheels with adapter end caps or conversion kits. I’ve seen some folks have success with it depending on the hub brand.
