Hi there,

My bikes been sitting for awhile (Santa Cruz Heckler 9) and I went to turn it on and nothing. So I plugged it in, and it beeps like normal flashes, the normal Shimano screen then immediately shuts off. It does that about 4 times than nothing. I checked all the connections. Any ideas? I have a video of it I’m not sure if I can post it here.

Sounds like a ground fault to me but if you've checked connections (and connectors) then it may not be that.

Depending on how long the bike was sitting and the charge level if there was any damage done to the battery.

You may need to take it to a shop for the dealer diagnostics.

Hey Colton,

I had the same thing happen to mine EP8 after not riding the bike for a few months.

There is a small battery in the ON - OFF switch that recharges when you ride it. It will run out if the bike sits for a while.

I took it to my local bike shop and they showed me the fix.

Put the bike on a stand with the rear wheel off the ground, and spin the rear wheel backwards FAST. It will engage the electric motor and the bike will turn on and that will jump start that small battery.

Hope this works for you!

That's correct about the small battery in the control unit. The official fix for this is to plug it into the computer interface device and let it charge off of that. This is an interesting hack though, if it works.

This hack absolutly does work. The only change I would recommend is to put your bike in the lolwest pobble gear (largest ring on your cassette) thereby allowing the pedals/cranks to move backwards faster as you rotate the read tire as fast as you can. The power button starts to light up. When it holds its ON position and you see the head unit come to life then you are done.

Hi,

Is this “small battery” like a coin cell battery? For example, like a 2032 coin cell. If so, does anyone know the exact location and if it is replaceable?

Thanks in advance!

So the fix is essentially to "bump start" a electric bike, how ironic, but definitely a cool hack to know. Thanks for posting it up.

The "hack" of spinning the wheel backwards doesn't work on my '21 Heckler, tried quite a few times. I've had to bring it to my LBS a few times now for them to charge that stupid switch battery, that SHOULD be user serviceable.

I'm at the point where it's more cost effective for me to buy the box & cable needed to hook it up and charge it at home instead of driving 35-40mins across town to the LBS.

In case anyone else needs one: https://alexscycle.com/products/shimano-sm-pce02b-ewsd300-pc-interface-for-di2-steps?_pos=1136&_sid=0f0ebda1a&_ss=r

Used this technique with succes on my wife’s Canyon Spectral:ON with the external start button. Used to charge the main battery off the bike, until one day the start button did not work allthough the main battery was fully charged. The bike mechanic told me that the small battery in the start button only get’s charged when the main battery is charged on the bike. You can’t replace the small battery of the start button, it’s encased in the resin off the start button.

Bike wouldn't turn on just flashed Shimano splash screen on display.
Did ride anyway. Phew a workout.
Got home found this answer. Worked a treat.
Thanks Isaac
