Does anyone have a holster or strap recommendation for carrying bear spray on the body while riding mtb? I do ride with a USWE pack but haven’t found a good option to attach to its straps. Thanks!

if you have a hydration pack already and room for a bottle cage, id recommend a fidlock

very secure, easy to access.

I don't have any great ideas for how to carry it (beyond the side water bottle pockets on my Osprey pack, but that doesn't make it very accessible) I will throw a caution out there - one of the guys in our group had one in his pack either wear through or puncture and he did end up with a kidney side full of spray one ride. He has no idea when it released on him.

For me I've just been using one of the cheap MEC holsters (the fancy one with the additional side sleeves) hanging off the lower hip strap in the front for quick access, but I've just been hiking this year while I recover from a shoulder injury. I did try to figure out how to get it to hang from the shoulder strap for quick access but wasn't able to make this particular holster work.

I like the water bottle idea with a fidlock, I have seen some water bottle mounts but never looked very close at them.

I'm curious about this too. I've stopped carrying one in my bad as I felt it would take too much time to get at, plus the worry it might break in a fall and add more pain to the ride. I've thought about the smaller ones, but maybe that defeats the purpose. Bears aren't a huge problem for people here so it's not been a top priority, but the occassional times hiking in the alpine etc. I bring for sure.

The title of a Frank Zappa song, "Why does it hurt when I ...?" has a special place for me. My bear spray safety pin came off and I didn't know. Cross contamination is not your friend.

My LBS sells the Bear Cozy which is a holder for smaller sized Bear spray cans. It makes the bear spray fit into a water bottle spot on your bike.

I hate to say it, but sadly Amazon for the win here again. I searched and searched local but to no avail, oh wait, yeah I found one for around 50 bucks....here is the link to the one I purchased on Amazon.

Works perfect, well constructed, 15 bucks. Can't argue.

That kidney-side bear spray surprise sounds rough, yikes. I’ve also struggled with quick access while keeping it secure. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with a chest rig using MOLLE clips, sits right across the sternum strap. Super quick draw and doesn’t bounce around too much.

I’ve also seen folks mod the MEC holsters with some extra Velcro or bungee cords to make them shoulder-strap friendly. Might be worth playing around with if you’re still in recovery mode.

I’d probably source a mollie-compatible holster and either buy a dedicated chest strap or secure it to an existing one.

Ok, that is cool and these guys are local to me, definitely going to pick one up now that I'm back on the bike.

Bro, just strap that bear spray somewhere you can grab it without pulling a yoga move mid-ride. I run mine on the shoulder strap of my pack with a cheap Velcro holster, easy reach if a bear pops up, and doesn’t rattle like crazy. Forget trying to mount it on the bike; it’ll just get covered in mud or fly off when you case something. If you’re using a USWE, try clipping it to the sternum strap or side harness. Whatever you do, don’t bury it in your bag, that’s basically bear seasoning at that point.

I would really consider whether you need one or not. If you are legitimately biking in grizzly country it’s not a bad idea to carry a weapon.

Bear spray is a real liability. I have been biking in bear country my entire adult life and never even remotely needed bear spray. But, I have had lots of crashes that, if the can was attached to my waist or flanks or ribs, would have easily smashed the pressurized contents and they would end up on me. I think it would really suck to be trying to recover from a crash while your skin, eyes, nose, mouth, face are on fire and you can’t breathe.
