in that case, forget about the dslrs lol...

i'd stick with a nikon or canon - or any reputable brand out there and look for a good deal. generally, the bigger the image sensor is, the better the image quality (so if you're going the cheap point-and-shoot route and want nice pictures, don't aim for the ultraportables, because those are just designed to be small, and have certain compromises).

a nikon 4300 or something similar is what i'd recommend for under 400.

Bodies:

Canon EOS 650 ($25 on Ebay)
Canon Elan 7 ($250 on Ebay w/Bp300 grip)
Canon Rebel XT ($1500, Got it when they were first announced)
Canon 5d ($3700)
Petri Rangefinder (Old school Japanese Rangefinder, $7 on Ebay)
Hasselblad 500EL/m (Body was Hand-me-down, Lens cost me more than I'd like to admit)

Lenses:

EF-s 18-55 MKII USM (Booooouuurns kit lens, $100?)
EF 50mm f1.8 MKI (Much sturdier than the MKII, $130 on Ebay)
EF 50mm f1.8 MKII (Much Lighter than the MKI, Good for hiking, $80 on Ebay)
EF 70-200mm f4 L ($800)
EF 24-70mm f2.8 L ($1800)

Gadgets:

Canon ST-E2 speedlite transmitter(Infrared, doesn't work great on sunny days, $250)
Canon Ex-550 speedlite ($300)
Canon Ex-430 speedlite ($300)
Couple of old sunpak flashes for the Hassy (Hand-me downs)
Filters.... etc
LowePro Commercial AW bag ($100 slightly used)

I really only use the Canon gear for MTB, all of the other gear is for weddings.

If you're looking to save yourself some money, But you want to stick with a DSLR, Go with a pentax, they use K mount Lenses, which is the most widely available lens mount with the best backwards compatibility. You can pick up an ist DL on ebay for $300 more or less and the lenses are dirt cheap if you don't mind manually focusing.

that's like saying all ef glass is cheap Smile

i really wish the quality glass was cheap, but it doesn't go down in value.. it goes up 'cause they're not manufactured anymore. you can get mf 50s for $30-60 depending on the model; anything else worth owning is mad $.

True, But we're not talking about good "Glass", He's trying to stick to a budget. Buying a K-mount compatible camera is going to give you the most flexibilty. Sure great glass still costs an arm and a leg regardless, but there are far more budget priced K-mount lenses than Canon or Nikon cameras. What other mount could you pick up a "decent" used 80-200mm lens for $25??

i'd love to know the answer to that hehe. there's a great lens db on pentaxforums.com and photozone.de has good mtf charts. it's the only way to avoid useless k mounts; there's a lot that seem good value but have shitty bokeh or completely lack the smc coating (takumar/etc).

i went with pentax for the k mount support. there's just something very cool about using a 30+ year old lens on a brand new dslr body with shake reduction Smile
