I need some Derailleur advice.

I need some Derailleur advice.

Right, heres the situation.

I own a 2007 Kona Stinky.

It comes stock with Shimano Deore Shifters and Deore LX Derailleur. Im talking about the rear. This has nothing to do with the front.

After 2 weeks of Hard Amateur Riding in France I wanna get a new derailleur.
I snapped 5 gear cables due to having a long cage derailleur.

So my questions are:

I want to get Sram X9. Thats £55 for the derailleur. And about £40 for the shifter. (I know I can get cheaper but Im using a middle of the range price as example)

But after some discussing and deliberation I thought that If I bought a Shimano Saint derailleur then I might not have to change the Shifter.

So... should I got for a complete Sram X9 set up including derailleur, Shifter, Cabling, Cassette and chain for roughly £150

OR

Should I buy a Saint derailleur for £85 and a new Chain so all in all costing about £100?

If the Shimano option is better suited, can I use the Deore shifter with a Saint derailleur?

Your views will be very much appreciated.

you can use any derailleur with any shifter as long as they are rated for the same amount of gears. if all you need is the derailleur then just get it.

wrong. You can use any sram shifter with any sram derailleur
same goes with shimano as they use a diffrent leverage ratio sram is 1:1 shimano is 2:1

Cause i read somewhere that using a larger cassette can sometimes not be compatible with Short cage derailleurs.

yes. it doesnt have enough movment to keep the chain completely tight.

Whats a typical DH cassette tooth range? Would it be 11-28t?

there abouts yes. A lot of people use 11-23 or 21 road cassettes though. So if you don't do too much climbing get a smaller one. I think you can get 11-25 aswell. That would give you a bigger difference between the gears.

So if you look at the saint derailleur specs, it says the following:

Model Number: RD-M810-GS
Series: SAINT
Shifting Action: SHADOW Top Normal
Mount Type: Drop-out
Maximum Sprocket: 28/34T
Minimum Sprocket: 11T
Front Difference: 14T
Total Capacity: 31/37T


They have two models, one that can handle a 28 tooth sprocket in the back and the other will handle up to a 34. The smallest one can be 11t. Now the differnce between your small and your big in the front must be 14 teeth or less. Then the difference between the largest on the front plus the difference between the largest and the smallest on the back must be less than 31 on what I'm guess is the medium length and 37 teeth on the long one.


Often guys who are riding hard and just learning will get the deore ones, because they tend to be a little tougher. And as a bonus they're the cheapest.

Well I got a 36t chainring with an LG1 on the front so what ever I get im sticking with whats on the front.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't a Saint derailleur need to be mounted on a Saint hub? If so, you'd have to consider a new hub or wheel with a Saint hub, which would make the Sram option more appealing in my opinion.

those are only the old derailleurs.

There are at least 2 shimano compatible Sram shifters, the Attak is X5 level and the rocket is X7 level. There is at least one trigger shifter lower than attack and I believe some twisters for the record.

Before you run out and buy a new derailer you should probably figure out why you are breaking cables because that is not normal at all. The LX is a good quality derailer and there is no reason not to use it if its set up properly.

I've been riding and wrenching for over 20 years and I've never seen or heard of someone breaking 5 shift cables.

Maybe but you jumped on the other guy and then posted inaccurate info yourself.

I we really wanted to get into this i could bring up the suntour duro derailer. you know the ones that can be run on either leverage ratio?
