I've been riding about 4/5 months now. I started out on a Norco Sasquatch hardtail and I've just stepped up to an Orange 222. From what I've personally learnt myself and from other riders, 4-6 months on a hardtail is the way to go to get a feel for freeriding and some light DH, THEN step up to a fully DH bike. Some very valuable advice that if I was someone starting out again, I would definately follow.

I rode a 06 norco rival for three years, did some DH, it's not bad but it's good for getting started. Then, after you progress you can buy a more expensive DH bike, you get alot more confident. But for now, stick with a hardtail.EDIT: BTW my rival put me back only 700$. That's a good starting price.

Cheapest way is to borrow a bike or, if you dont ride that often, rent when you do. Once you decide to buy, spending too little is probably worse than just continuing to rent cause you end up with a bike that spends more time on the repair stand than on the trail.
