Well ive currently got a kona shred 08 and the gears are messed up. I think its a problem with the derailleur because it dosent look right. The problems are-

When i pedal backwards the chain just goes slack and dosent move.
I cannot change right hand gears.
Its making a little noise when i pedal.
Chain is pretty slack.

Anyone know how to sort the problem? I could get a picture for you if it would help.

first, there's no such thing as "right side gears"
I assume you mean the shifter on the right side which is the rear shifter.

noise is normal, any moving parts make a certain amount of noise.

and yes, get pictures.

Yeh sorry for my lack of knowledge mate. Not really a bike whizz. Its a noise it shouldnt be making, like a clicky noise, but thats not a big problem at the minute. Ill go get pictures of derailleur.

i had this problem on my bike a while back, the problem is with the freewheel, you need to get it replace or lubed up

If you can't pedal backwards, I'd suggest it's something in the hub itself.
Probably needs to be cleaned...

So how do i lube the freewheel up?

Weel, you've got to get a cassette tool and a chainwhip to get the cassette off, then the cassette will pop off. One the cassette is off, the splined part underneath will either pull off, or will be able to be removed with the removal of a couple bolts. Be careful though, sometimes a whole pile of small parts will go everywhere.

Right thanks, its just that i dont think its that. I mean i think its a problem with the derailleur as the gears dont even change so obvs problems with the derailleur too. I thought it looked a little cramped together, what do you think?

take it to a bike shop.

Just take er to the shop and get them to put a new cable on and adjust it. You will have to go back in to get them to re adjust it after a little bit of riding because a new cable stretches quite a bit.

If it were a problem with the freewheel he wouldn't be able to coast either.

Right cheers, ill take it tomorro. So no-one can think of anything i could try to solve it myself with the derailleur?

Derraileur adjustment link

But you still need to get a new cable, so you should ask the shop to set it all up for you. Also, your hub/freewheel is probably fine.
