getting a new wheel setup for both wheels. im looking at the Mavic EX721 or the EX823.
now the EX823 is sed to be a rebranded DeeMax rim, no diffrents but the paint job and the prise is £20 less. the EX823 is also not very light coming in at a weight of 657g, but it is one of the strongist rims going. 823 rim crc link Unsecure image, only https images allowed: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Images/Models/Full/17131.jpg On the other hand the EX721 is similar design but lighter, coming in at 590g. but not as strong as the EX823, but its still no push over. 721 rim crc link Unsecure image, only https images allowed: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Images/Models/Full/3442.jpg The EX721 is also around £16 cheaper, but that dont matter to much. Also they will be fitted with Pro2's just so you know. My type of riding is freeride with what DH i can get my hands on.(not much of it round my area, but will be traveling this year)
Tell what you think is the best to go with and why. Thanks!
It really comes down to if you want to run tubes, or not. I'd go 721's with tubes, 823's tubeless (obviously) I believe a lot of the added weight on the 823's is from the UST nipples.

Will wont to be running with tubes. thx for the reply
the Ex823 is not the same rim as the new DeeMax, but was the same as the old one...
Mavics independently available (without buying one of their wheelsets) top of the range hardcore rims that use welded seams and their Maxtal alloy are as such:
Ex721 - vee-brake compatible, narrowist, weakest, lightest, for tubes
Ex729 - disc only, for tubes, strongest, heaviest (but not actually that heavy)
Ex823 - Tubeless only, in between the 721 and 729 for weight and strength, only worth having if you plan to run tubeless
EDIT: any rim is breakable and I've seen both Ex721 rims and Ex729 rims get destroyed with ease - ensuring you have a good quality wheel build, using strong spokes [36 preferable] and if possible threadlocked nipples [like DT prolocks] and then regularly re-tensioning the wheel to keep it strong is more important than just getting the strongest possible rim

very helpful thanks, tempting to go with the EX729's but it weighs a masive 675g, EX721 seem good but dont wont skinny rims. still stuck for what i wont

So you're considering the 823 at 657 grams, but you don't want the 729's at 675? There is no way when you're riding you can actually notice the 18 gram a rim weight difference.

Are you sure about that? You know there is also a new 823 right? I e-mailed Mavic about 'black' deemax's back in January and they say the 823s are identical to the deemax except for color. Also, the deetraks is supposed to be the same rim as the 325.
Also, the 823s can be run with tubes as someone else pointed out but it's Presta only, not schradder.

No but since you need a tube with the 729's, it's actually more like a 400 gram difference.
I have ridden the 721's on hope pro2's for 7 months here and they have held up amazingly well with the rocky trails around santa barbara. The only thing i don't like is that they are vbrake compatible which makes it look a little weird on a dh bike
Leroy, the current 09' 823 hoops are not the same as the 09' Deemax hoops. The prior years have been the same.
Not to get off topic but... Any idea what the diff is? Same dimesions and same 'tech' according to Mavic's site. So much for building my own 'deemax' in black.
