Upgrading from 7 speed to 9 speed

hi there guys... im wanting to upgrade my wife's bike from a 7 to 9 speed. i have all the derailleurs, shifter, cassette for a 9 speed already from when i upgraded the parts from my bike. my question is now....do i need to change the crankset too? thanks!

nope, front cranks should be fine. i made my 27 speed into a 9 speed. so i don't see why you couldn't change a 21-29 speed, but you will probably need a different rim hey? if the spacing on the freewheel is only for 7speed i think 8-9 is managable but i don't think 7-9 is.

9 speed chain is a slimmer profile, most likely wont fit the 7 speed chainrings, put the chain on and see if it sticks, and depending on the rear wheel, it may not have a big enough freehub body for 9 speed

ok...no the freehub on the wheel right now is made for 8-9 speed and it has a spacer right now for the 7 speed. so should i also get new chain for it??? thanks!

yeah, 7 speed chain wont fit the cassette, you'd be fine if you were switching to 8 speed, but the 9 speed profile is different

most definetly agree with this. Also, whenever you replace a cassette, its a good idea to replace the chain. Chances are, if the cassette is worn, then it will wear out the chain as well. And when a new cassette is introduced to a worn chain, the cassette will wear out very quickly.

But ya, just buy a cheap 9-speed chain, and try to wrap it around the crank chainrings. If it "grabs" on the chainrings, then you will need to get some new rings. Not a new crank, just the rings. It shouldn't be to expensive
