Kamloops Bike Ranch kicks off Phase 2

Oct 14, 2005
by Tyler Maine
It’s now been three months since the Kamloops Bike Riders Association (KBRA) celebrated the grand opening of The Ranch – a dedicated mountain bike and BMX park in Kamloops, B.C. – with the “Hoedown at the Ranch.” Since then, a small handful of dedicated volunteers have been out to pasture, so to speak, squeezing in maintenance days between riding, work and summer travels. It is amazing what the KBRA accomplished in such a short time, making a reality of what was a distant dream of a few local, visionary riders over the past couple years. The organization was formed early in 2005 and struck an agreement with the city that saw the creation of a sanctioned city park dedicated to biking (including their support of some $70,000) – all in a few months’ time. The development involved countless hours by volunteers to see the exceptional BMX track, The Pines, a DH dirt-jump trail called “A Fist Full of Dollars,” and a progressive dirt jump park called “The Corral” come to fruition.

Since that time, we’ve hosted a very successful BC BMX Championships and have held the inaugural, Hoedown dirt jump celebration. As well, a number of big-name film crews such as Freeride Entertainment and others have been making the best of our unique terrain in The Ranch, filming riders such as Aaron Chase and Kyle Strait.
And now, as they saying goes, it’s time to pull up our rattlesnake-skin boots and spur our iron horses in gear (or something like that). We’re ready to get digging and building on Phase 2, and that means we’re soliciting sponsorship support to get – and keep – things going.

This is where you come in…
The KBRA would like to formally invite the bike industry and individuals to participate in the expansion and continuance of this primarily volunteer-developed, progressive mountain bike park. We are soliciting financial support in the hopes that we can accomplish a number of key objectives, namely:

•Developing an irrigation system to easily and regularly water the BMX, Downhill and dirt jump areas

•Develop a new intermediate “flow” trail

•Continue to maintain the trails to ensure a high-quality ride

•Develop key infrastructure in the park such as kiosks, garbage cans, portable toilets and a secure donation lock-box

•Establish regular community BMX and Downhill races to promote a friendly, competitive side of biking and to cultivate youth talent

•Continue the progression of our trails so they will continue to appeal to the high caliber of riding for which Kamloops has become renowned.

Your support will be the proverbial tobacco in our lip, the whiskey in our whistles, the hot branding on our collective arse…basically, in order to keep the Ranch running and riders ripping, sponsorship will be essential.

Where the, what the?
The Ranch is free to ride and is located between Valley View and Juniper Ridge in East Kamloops. The park is flanked by an easy paved shuttle on Highland Drive for the downhill trail and ample parking for the lower dirt jump park or upper BMX track.

The Kamloops Bike Riders Association was formed by riders for riders, and aims to promote the progression, safety and legality of all aspects of mountain biking and BMX in the Kamloops area. Other initiatives include trail advocacy, developing a trail management agreement with government for the popular Mt. Harper area, promoting safe riding, holding trail maintenance and development workshops, and promoting mountain biking through instructive courses.
