Hyper Bicycles has a long history in the sport of BMX, including a National Pro Championship in 1993, delivered by Eric Carter. This early success helped to establish Hyper as a major player in BMX. In the intervening years Hyper has maintained its position as a leader in BMX, with a full line of products for racing and freestyle riders. Hyper has also continued its commitment to the sport by sponsoring riders, teams, as well as being the series title sponsor for several major events. As Hyper has established its position at the "core" levels of Race and Freestyle, it has also become a major player in the Mass and Specialty Sporting Goods Markets, offering BMX Bikes, Mountain Bikes and other products to a broad consumer audience.
bigquotesTo be back with Hyper is a great opportunity that I'm very excited about to, say the least. Together we accomplished some great things when we last put our minds together and it was very apparent to me during our first meeting discussing this future Hyper Mountain Bike program that the synergy is still in place. To be handed the keys to the castle with the task of building a high end line of Mountain Bikes for the Hyper brand is both a big responsibility and honor. I look forward to the challenge. I will still be on the bike at all scheduled events but my role will be more directed toward educating Riders about our products and growing the brand at a grass roots level, rather than focusing solely on results. - Eric Carter

Hyper has also brought Waylon Smith on board. Waylon is known in the Southern California area as a multi-talented cyclist, racing and winning the 2011 Overall SRC series titles in both the Downhill and XC. Waylon’s focus for Hyper, aside from the SRC series, will be on the growing segment of Super D/ Enduro racing. "With such a long history of active, successful participation in BMX, it is time for Hyper to establish a similar position in the Mountain Bike community. The obvious choice to manage our MTB program is longtime friend and Downhill, Slalom, 4-cross legend Eric Carter. Eric is currently heading up our Product Development Program and is organizing our marketing and support efforts. Eric has already committed to a schedule of Racing and Festivals as well as other promotional opportunities to provide visibility in our effort to create the foundation for Hyper's continued involvement in Mountain Biking" said Joe DeChamp, Hyper Bicycles, Inc. vice president.

Clay Goldsmid, owner / CEO Hyper Bicycles, Inc. on Hyper’s new venture had this to say: "For me personally, after riding BMX all my life ... I'm super excited to now be involved in the Mountain Bike side of cycling and to attend numerous events riding Hyper Mountain Bikes! Even dating back to the early days of our BMX heritage, I've had the dream of developing a MTB program as a part of our natural progression, we want to do it right, and considering Eric's existing contributions to Hyper's legacy, it's no wonder his name is at the top of a select list of people who I want to help us take on such an endeavor. Eric is the perfect ambassador for our brand

Pinkbike's Take:
bigquotesHyper may not be a name that jumps out when talking about mountain bikes, but given Carter's development prowess it will likely only be a matter of time until we see some very interesting things from them. Congrats on the new gig, Eric, and we can't wait to see what you have cooking!

So I assume he will be racing a bmx bike at fontana until they get the dh bike developed
  • 72
or race dh on a bmx...?
  • 10
Raleigh that would be fucking gnarly. Hahaha your joints would ache. Hyper's got a new Bmx Race frame out for 2012 and it looks stellar. Can't wait to see what they come up with for Mtb.
  • 50
Btw for all you crazy foreigners Fontana is a downhill track that Eric frequents so racing dh on a bmx bike is what I meant with the first comment
  • 10
 EDIT. Haha. Wrong person. FML.
  • 40
Eric Carter here. Thanks for the interest and comments...I want to clarify some stuff on here. From the product side of things, what I have been brought in to oversee the development of is not the Bicycles you see in Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire. Hyper does produce bikes at that level, but in regard to the above Press Release and topic in discussion Hyper is committed to doing higher end stuff for MTB's. Neither Waylon or I will be racing BMX bikes at Fontana or any other Mountain bike events. We are currently in the testing phase for our product line that I look forward to rolling out in the future. If you guys have any questions, fire em off and I will do my best to answer them.

Eric, you rock! Great pick up on Waylon, that guy is a stud. Can't wait to see what you guys bring next year. Best of luck with Hyper!
  • 20
This is really exciting. I've ridden many a Mongoose and GT in my life and if you can do what you did for them, Hyper is going to be a major contender. I love my boot'r and maybe someday soon she'll be retired for a hyper. My only request is that you guys have a frameset option. Something that Mongoose hadn't done in the past. Do you think that will be a possibility?
  • 20
The idea of a Frame Set offering is on the table, but it will/would most likely be in limited numbers.

Our primary focus right now is putting a quality line of completes together.

This is awesome. We've got the one and only EC here answering questions!!! My question (if you're able to answer it for whatever reason) is: Will Hyper be making an FR bike/frame/line??? and What is the planned product line up in terms of "segments" of MTB to be covered??? What I mean is alot of comapnies are going to the trend of only really making their high-end bikes in segements where there's a racing application. IE. They have a DH frame/bike, a full XC line-up and they've got an AM/Enduro line, but NO FR line because there's no racing application to the bike (companies like Rocky Mountain, Devinci and some others come to mind). They've got good justification to put the money into the R&D for them for that reason but it's sad to see the FR bike fading in some companies lines (I realize at the same time that alot of people are "re-evaluating" what they need in a bike and finding that an AM/Enduro bike is more then capable, but a full blown FR bike still has it's place IMO.)...

I started racing BMX back in 84or5 and you've always been someone I've seen a GERAT ambassador to the sport. I saw you rolling around at Fontana one year and you seemed so laid back and personable. Gotta say, I'm glad good things are happening to you and I'm glad to be part of a sport where the "stars" are so down to earth for the most part. Congrats on the new gig mate. keep at it, you're a great role-model for what's possible aye.

Your welcome Medic and thanks for the kind words, hearing riders notice that i am approachable, laid back and personable, and as i like to say "just a bike geek" like everyone else is more important to me then any championships i could have ever won.

I have already talked with Mike Here at PB to do a Q&A about Hyper in the near future and will address what bikes we will be producing.
  • 10
Cool, I'll look forward to that. No worries man, glad to hear you'll get to throw all your knowledge into a bike line. That's gotta kinda be a dream come true aye.

I remember my first 40 lb Hyper BMX bike from Canadian Tire, Good times! Will be interesting to see how there MTB line folds out
  • 40
me too....hyper dirt king FTW lol
  • 20
who didn't have a hyper dirt king??!, and i remember they had a hyper MTB.. it had a frame like the old santa cruz jackel from what i remember hahaha
  • 10
lets just hope they don't try and sell them at canadian tire.....
  • 30
hyper impact24 was the jackel looking bike, i had one and loved it back in the day
  • 10
yeah the impact 24! I remember i always wanted one, then i bought some CCM bike instead because it had some fancy gauge style shifters by the stem that i thought were awesome.. gotta love being a 10 year old looking for a bike to beat the shit out of Razz
  • 10
aha i had one to! loved the thing till the crank fell off Frown
  • 10
Hey Eric, I know its early but any plans on a full suspension 4x/DS bike? Please say yes. We can use a few more options. Thanks...
  • 10
SlickShoe...the 4x DS bike is not scheduled to be part of the initial line, if we do one it will be a hard tail focused on Dirt Jump and Pump track stuff.
  • 10
Bummer, short-travel squshy DS/DJ/4x bikes are some of my favorite kinds of frames cause htey make every trail into a jump trail... Guess that answers a bit of my question above aye.
  • 10
I agree those types of bikes are really fun to ride and it doesn't mean that we won't have something like this in the future, and given our history in BMX it's a good fit. The reality is in our first year we can't come out with a complete line of bikes that suits each segment of the sport right out of the gate.
  • 10
Makes sence. Gotta give a company time to evolve/develop right? Just remember there are alot of folks like us out there who love short travel squishy's so throw in a good word next year aye Wink HAHAHAHAHA I STILL have my 02 Norco 4x4 and it's still fun as ever to rip around on. I sometimes feel bad for guys on "big bikes" (untill it get's REALLY ROUGH) I know what it feels like to feel pinned to the ground versus being able to pop off every little root and lip/berm... so much fun...
  • 10
DJ/4X bikes are the least risky frames to produce in gravity cycling. Why? Because gravity riders tend to have a more limited budget than roadies and xc/am guys, and DJ/4X bikes are the cheapest. Take a look at Cannondale. They pretty much gave up on the gravity sect. Thanks Lebron.

No stranger than having a bike company started by surfers...
  • 22
 Rob Roskopp was a skater.
  • 20
I wasn't referring to Santa Cruz thanks.
  • 10
I know the guys from Kona were surfers up in BC(even crazier then surfing in Oregon Big Grin ) but what other companies are you talking about??? I'm not saying you're wrong I'm just curious who/what company aye... NAd yeah, I have a Rob Roskopp sig. board hanging on the wall of my shop... I always thought that was cool that he started SC. It's cool to see you have cross-over intrests with other people.
  • 10
Intense for one... Jeff Stebber worked R&D for a windsurfing company in 1980 before he got into mountain biking.
  • 10
Makes sence when I think about it, JS LOOKS like a surfer aye.
  • 20
Hopefully more competition in the market will mean lower prices for us!
  • 10
Bring those bikes to the NW Cup series! www.nwcup.com
  • 10
 Hell yeah!!!! I second that...
  • 10
will be cool to see an intense with hyper decals...
  • 21
 i can not wait!!!!!!!!!!
  • 11
 WAAAAAAAAAAAA
  • 58
Isn't that a wal-mart brand? Why is this even on pinkbike?
  • 101
Lots of brands find their way into wal-mart. Mongoose for example has two divisions, a high end and a low end. Gotta look at the big picture here. Eric Carter isn't going to be riding a tin-foil wal-mart bike. Hopefully we see something really cool come out of them. It's always exciting to see what a company does as they move into a new area of business.
  • 72
same with ironhorse,i hate when thos little 12 year olds think that just becaus a bike is a ironhorse means its a piece of crape, like some of them are good.
  • 33
some kid said that my 09 big hit was a piece of crap because it was full of sratches and old
  • 11
A single championship in 1993 doesn't say much for the company in today's market. I guess it is also a sport where anything can happen, so we'll see how it works out for them. Best of luck to the guys riding the bikes and the company itself. And I am not saying Ironhorse made crap bikes; They made the Sunday which kicked ass, and their freeride bikes rocked as well. Now that they are Airborne I would never recommend one. And bobby-owen- if you treat your bike like crap and let it get scratched and dented anybody would call it a piece of crap.
  • 20
Altho,iv never seen a pro hyper bmx?
  • 10
@jstone man. i actually take good care of it. its just got some scraches from riding it a bit too hard and a dent from a big crash
  • 20
I remember Hyper Race bikes from when i raced nice bmx ... Gd luck EC your a legend in my books Big Grin
