Bike Magazine's slopestyle contest Rocks Snowshoe, West Virginia

Snowshoe, West Virginia, Freeride phenom Darren Berrecloth threw a huge 360 spin off the 25-foot ladder bridge atop Bike Magazine's Monster Park course and walks away with his second victory at the slopestyle competition.

“The event was amazing…the course was incredible and the level of riding was sick,” said Berrecloth, just moments after accepting his first-place trophy.Twenty-four of the world's best riders descended on the hills of central West Virginia for the second-annual event, which was held at Snowshoe Mountain. Course builder and mountain bike cinematographer Ted Tempany designed the course with input from riders and help from the mountain.

“Monster Park was a huge step for snowshoe's mountain bike program gaining national attention,” said Brian Rowe, Snowshoe's director of marketing. “We've got great trails here and were happy to showcase them through the event. The whole thing was a great success, attracting close to 1,000 riders to our mountain.”

The event was by far the largest competition of it's kind and spectators lined the course from top to bottom, five deep in spots, taking in every moment, cheering on their favorite riders. Red Bull DJ Al spun tunes and MC Brad Ewen kept the crowd amped.

Monster Park is a rider-judged contest, a format that greatly appeals to the athletes. The riders were broken into two groups, with one group judging the other. After two heats, the 12 top riders moved to the finals with judging handled by the remaining athletes. Berrecloth took first place and the largest share of the $10,000 prize purse; Thomas Vanderham and Jamie Goldman joined him on the podium, finishing second and third, winning $2,500 and $1,000 respectively.

“The entire competition was about the riders and they threw down in every way, from the judging to the riding to how well they supported each other. It was an honor to be a part it,” said Mitchell Scott, Bike Magazine's editor at large and the competition's head judge.
