Chris Ball's Dirt School DVD

Feb 6, 2009
by Si Paton
Looking to polish up your XC trail skills? Then this is definitely one to watch. Scottish DH National Coach Chris Ball teamed up with Reset Films to bring you the Dirt School DVD. Whether you are a novice or an advanced rider there is something in here for you.Chris delivers relaxed and informal lessons on all the fundamentals of the trails you will ride from blue to black grade.
This is really aimed at you trail centre/center junkies out hitting technical rides and not your beginner spinning through the park or along the canal towpath.

As Scottish National DH Coach he already has one UCI DH World Champion under his wing (Rhubarb) and he is currently working with the next future DH champions with the likes of Flockhart, Scott and Buchanan (You heard these names here, first!)

Just note this DVD is XC based and not a DH tutorial. That said many of the skills Chris has picked up along the way do transfer very nicely across all cycling disciplines.

Filmed in beautiful Scotland at Glentress and Innerleithen on their World famous 7 Staines Trails you also get a great insight into what we ride over here in the U.K, even Judith Charmers would have been impressed (Wish You Were Here).

Scotland at it's best.

Divided up into three main sections that break down as follows:

Section 1
Flat Corners
Berms
Switchbacks
Rocky Corners
Rutted Corners

Section 2
Roll-In
Manual
Drop-Off
Bunny Hop
Jump

Section 3
Body Position
Rock Steps
Roots
Rocks
Suspension

Use this guide today and as a future reference by revisiting each section and refreshing yourself and confirming what you have learned, why and how it works. You will ultimately get around every trail now, quicker, smoother and impress your mates as well, especially if you get that manualling down even Hans Rey would be impressed.

My dad got this DVD for Xmas, and its really good. Covers everything you might need for trail riding, and everything is explained very clearly.... well worth it if you need some more skills (Y)

i know several racers that have radically improved mainly because of chris`s skool ...it works ans works well . a better location is hard to find also

Looks like a good DVD, but if it is aimed mainly at XC riding, should it not have a section on climbing/technical climbing as this is also a crucial aspect to trail riding. From the breakdown it looks like most of it is based around what most people would class as DH skills?

I honestly wouldnt say it's really XC oriented, more just trail riding. That said though, a lot of the stuff in section three is geared towards going uphill too, particularly the "rock steps" section of it.

Yeah fair enough, I was just going from what is written in the article. It didn't really explain that there was anything to do with climbing in it, but I guess some of the parts could be applied to going up as well as going down. I just wanted clarification because I may buy it.

I did the dirt skool training with chris ball, he is a really sound guy who is a very good teacher. if the dvd is as good as the coaching is face to face, it is a good investment!

the dvd is excellent, and well recommended to anyone who wishes to improve their skills. Everyone can pick up tips from it, no matter what their ability is, Chris knows his stuff.

It does include climbing. The rock steps section is about going up them! It's sorted me right out. I always got shafted on those

that last pic is so sick
  • 31
 i agree, epic too

Last pic is Spooky Wood at Glentress, it flows soooo well.

Â£18? Sounds like money well spent to me just for the scenery by the looks of things.

why ain't arran mentioned in the future stars? and joe, becks, emma, fraser more than just those 3 in the dh team

This is actually a really good video. I've seen a few "instructional" type films and thought this was one of the better ones to be sure.

stay unlcipped is damn right - teach those XC wannabe riders how real XC riding is done
  • 13
hey, clip in to win! and he doesn't say anything about vision!!!! WTF, you got to see to ride!
  • 10
im sure that most people that can ride a bike are able to see quite well.
  • 00
thats not the question though. where is the use of reference points during races! i dont see it in his program! ask any great racer (not the guy that wins expert local races) and they will tell you vision is the biggest thing.
  • 00
i was taking the piss...geeeeee. anyway, he did go through vision in the coaching i went to, only on corners though, but it is still in there.
