Enduro World Series Round 4, Ireland: Race Day Photo Epic

May 28, 2017
by Dave Trumpore

After a day of rain turned dust into mud, riders came into race day unsure of what they would find hiding in the Irish hills. Would it be tacky or maybe a bit slimy and sticky? The answer was all of the above. The ever-changing conditions made each stage a bit of a mixed bag full of unique challenges, and it was riders who could adapt and react on the fly that were able to exploit weakness from their rivals throughout the day. And that's not even taking into account the added pressure piled on by the Irish fans who came out in the thousands to both cheer and heckle all day long.

For Cecile Ravanel and Adrien Dailly the challenges on and off the track were no distraction and they put in nothing short of dominant performances. Cecile won each and every stage handily, and Adrien won three of the six (and finished 2nd, 3rd, and 6th in the other stages). The same could not be said for Ireland's golden boy and two-time winner here, Greg Callaghan. Even the massive Irish crowd that seemed to carry him to victory the previous two years was of little help, and when a rider has an off day there's really nothing one can do but try to survive...and survive Greg did. Despite finishing a few stages back in the teens and twenties he still rallied back hard enough to earn valuable points and leaves Ireland with his series lead intact, but only by the skin of his teeth.

With four rounds down and four to go, the EWS has come to its midpoint as we head into a short break before picking this back up in France next month. For the women it looks like Cecile will be hard to beat, but the remaining podium spots will certainly be up for grabs as riders like Katie Winton and Isabeau Courdurier continue to charge at the front. For the men, things are about as tight as they can get with only 60 points separating Greg Callaghan, Sam Hill, and Adrien Dailly, ensuring that this season things will most certainly come right down to the wire in Finale Ligure in October.

Great pics as ever. Love the one of Richie Rude, who muscles his bike, race face on while many in the crowd have facial expressions that say "how the hell did he ride that out? Again..." The crowd are so much a part of these events, particularly in Ireland.

@beerhunter: I was right there at stage 3 (obscured) and can testify that every rider was cheered down that section, there was plenty of fallers and even some walkers who were still cheered on, because, in the end, it's the least we could have done for these guys.

He's always been on the unlucky side with mechanical especially back in his 4x days. Quality rider, only a matter of time before luck falls into place.

Please name the mechanicals he's had this year. You realize he's 7th overall right?

 Flat tires ???????????? @Khayes:
  • 5 4
Last week he flatted in a spot that around 5 other people flatted in the same part of the stage and still put around 15 into those riders times. He flatted yesterday on stage 7 and that point he lost 7-9th place he's on track for a good season especially with these next 4 rounds. This time last year he wasn't in contention for a top 10. @tuumbaq:

What are ou trying to prove dude ?You seem so butthurt... You first asked me to name you the mechanicals he's had and them realized you mad a fool of yourself. Now you're trying to prove an unexsisting argument.Im not debating wether he's having a better or worst season! Lol .The guy is a talented rider and was dominating back when he races for Yeti but look at the freaking stats in recent years, Jared's had way more mechanicals and punctures than most other riders and thats all Im saying .Not saying its his fault or that he sucks but im really not sure what you're trying to say @Khayes:

I wasn't replying to you although you did fit the category since I didn't tag any username. The thread started with "soooooo many mechanicals this year" ... which there has been 2. Not saying it's an excuse but maybe less emphasise on so. Cheers_! @tuumbaq:

 Oh , gotcha now @Khayes:

Everyone is just fast now eh. Sports got so many new quick faces. Hard to dominate. Take more risks = more crashes, more flat tyres, more mechanicals. It feels more and more like WRC rally now, riding on the edge with total commitment but still in the back of your head must be, shit, gotta get this bike and this body to the end of the day.

Can someone explain the full face and non full selections? It seems to me that I've seen some photo epics where say Rude for example has pictures of him in a full face on some stages and then a non full face on others.

is it just me or does Rude´s bike looks ridiculous small under him compared to the trend lately? Like "look it´s 2013 again"

Nice to see Sam Hill had that happy face looks while racing. Guess enduro bring a better challenge to him. Considering he has a better purpose built body too right now.
