until today --- haven't really needed ice ---- the stupid temps have been low for what seems like forever.

No need for ice!! My kind of weather, I like low temps. Back in 2001, I was in vacation in Europe and in Austria I got 2ºC and 2m height of snow! I was on a ski/snowboard track...
