Looks like a pretty fun bike. I just always worry about the rear shock when it's that close to the rear wheel and so exposed

Yeah it's so much fun. I've never had a problem with the rear shock being there, plus it absorbs all the small bumps better/works better in medium compression to the normal suspension design, it's called center force suspension..
