why would you need to buy the cranks too? They would just fit like normal pedals surely?

No.
These are FlyPaper pedals.
its a completely different system.
They actually bore out the pedal insert, and make it adaptable with their pedal.
Its something like 400$ for the cranks, and pedals.
Sick setup though.

A rite fe, that pretty expensive tho, whats the likelyhood of them bending and snapping on hard impacts ect. They made of like titanium, well for the price they must be
