Instead of just painting over the frame with a brush, try using a color overlay, or blending options on a new layer. Just go in with the Lasso tool and outline all the parts that you want to make the same color, then create a new layer, select the brush tool, select "use all layers," and fill the selected area. Then, below where you select the layers, use the pulldown menu to change the method of blending. Try "overlay" or "multiply."
