its lower and gives better geometry. Atleast move the stem down and put the spacers above it....

well u could do that. Or just move the stem if you dont want to cut the steerer tube!

150-200$ off the resale price? What have you been smoking? Cutting the steerer a little won't lose any resale value as you can't sell second hand forks for anywhere close to retail/shop price anyway.
